The ship they beached in the Solent due to it having a list and fears she'd turn turtle is now resting at a 52degree angle.It was reported this morning as having Rolls Royces,Bentleys and Land Rovers on board.However tonight it's said to have Jaguars,Land Rovers,Minis and some heavy JCB equipment on board.I don't know how vehicles are secured for sea crossings,but given the 50 odd degree angle would these be strong enough to keep the vehicles-whatever they are-in place?If not there could be one very expensive and messy scrapheap in there!

Not possible these are stern loaded only, no bow doors, and the stern ramp is stowed. Water might be entering the hull at every high tide though, worsening the list... equally the sand bank might be starting to shift under the weight... either way, it does look set to roll over

I strongly suspect the people in the know will be running a check on the service history of this particular vessel and wondering if it is a money pit for the operators.

That's similar to what I heard .............

I was told that the crew felt something move in the hold and the ship started to list over to the point that it may roll and capsize so the captain deliberately grounded it on the sandbank to save the boat / crew.

If that's right then he deserves free beer for life for his quick thinking and the dickhead who is responsible for the load moving should be buying them (after he is released from nick)

Wtf I was referring to the loading... For summat to shift whilst navigating Southampton Water, it clearly wasn't secured properly. And yes the ship is now off the sandbank, but it was towed back to the docks whilst still listing at 50 odd degrees. Clearly that isn't normal, ergo summat went wrong... So it stands to reason that someone screwed up.

Watched a cross channel ferry being loaded with vehicles on telly last week. It's a real rush job and every part of the operation is done by someone responsible for that particular task. The use chains slotted into channels in the floor and they are tightened with ratchets. From what I saw, if a big piece of metal like a mechanical digger was to break free, there's no way that the adjacent vehicles wouldn't go with it.

I was in no way criticising the captain/crew in the original post.Indeed the captain-and I believe the pilot was still also on board did exactly the right thing and as stated saved a whole load more mess if the ship had actually rolled!
