price enquiry

Hi guys, been to my local vx garage this morning to ask about a few parts prices as I am wanting to replace my cam belt, tensioner, water pump and thermostat. They want nearly £400 for these parts. Is that too expensive? Is it best to use genuine vx parts or can I save a lump by going to my local auto factors? I can ill afford £400 at the moment and any saving would really help, thanks again in advance.

Well they would of course be the best parts, and £400 for genuine kit I wouldn't have thought was a bad price at all but I may be wrong.
However, top quality gear can be had for half that quite easily which is what I've done in the past and will be doing again in the near future.
Try autovaux in Wakefield, always worth a call.

The water pump is sold, but the cambelt kit may still be available if you contact James.

£210 for mine  :'( But it does have the superior engine in  :P

Cam belt kit is £116 plus vat on trade club, £144 without plus vat
Water pump £71.81 + vat trade and £133 without +vat
I don't have a price on the thermostat as that's the next job.

Other kits are out there

A good alternative to GM is the Contitech belt kit from bypartsby, which many of us use.  :y  So depending on your engine it's either £97.70 or £105.12.  They also do a QH waterpump for £22, not sure what their like though. I had a Circoli water pump from these guys last year for about the same price.  :)

Did we not agree that on a V6 changing the water pump is not essential, anyway the quality of some is suspect. I certainly had one fail on a 2.0, wrecking the engine; wish I had never changed it.

That's about £150 in parts if you source them sensibly. The only part I'd consider from Vx would be the waterpump, and even then would buy pattern. It's not driven by the cambelt on a V6, so only needs replacing for your peace of mind.


An OE thermostat is readily available for under £20, and Contitech or Gates cambelt kits are always a good bet. They are the manufacturers of the things after all.

Hell and I though I had it rough down for pricing!!  We cant get "origional" Omega parts here, no listings no nothing so have to think outside the square a bit

-Gates cambelt (origional for a Renault) $70NZ  (30GBP)
-Idlers (Tentioner)$15 (6GBP) each genuine but for a Ford Falcon
-New Waterpump $65 (30GBP)

All up to replace cambelt with decent quality parts about $150NZ; 70GBP

Mind you I have to import from UK things like airfilters that costs about the same as a cambelt change!
