After taking general advice didnt go for corsa with outstanding finance,i am now going for a corsa which the guy admits he bought recently at auction(fair enough) its priced about right , the only thing is its still on the last owners v5 name . The guy said its to save another owner on v5 which seems fair ,im going to see tomorrow PM with view to buy ,what do i need to see on v5 should the previous owner have signed bottom section? what do you all think, thank you as always

HPI it, plus DVLA car check (free to do and piss easy on line)

DVLA check will tell you Tax and Mot status and also if it needs a VIC or has had one...

Seller should also have a bill of sale from the auction house, along with photo id that matches him and the name on the bill of sale along with his address, which incidentally should be where the car is at

Final check might be to ring 101, give the reg number and ask if it's on the Police radar. If the car checks out but you're not sure of the seller, the do this last check in front of them. If he squirms, walk away

And it goes without saying, any doubts, walk away

You do seem to be choosing 'odd ball cars' sometimes it is not worth buying privately, buy from a dealer, may cost a little more, but you have much more protection if it turns out to be a dud.............

Crikey Paul  . . . you do seem to be choosing the more "unusual" type of seller.

Plenty of good private ones out there though . . . 

  IMO   ask these basic questions first before even going to have a look:

Answers you are looking for follow each question

Is this your car you are selling & are you the legal owner ?   ( spouse, son or daughter is ok )    YES   

Is your name on the V5 & how long have you owned the car  ?    YES

Is the address where you are going to look at the car on the V5 ?   YES

Has the car ever been involved in any accident or any type of insurance claim? ( if so a VIC may be required)  NO

Are there any "notes" on the bottom of the V5 ?   ( it may say "car has been substantialy repaired" which means it has had a VIC & was an insurance write off , although this can be for really minor damage sometimes)  NO

Is there any outstanding finance on the car ?   NO

How many previous owners has the car had ?     The fewer the better

If the above questions are not answered as advised  . . .  IMO   . . move on to another car

This is standard practice with all dealers whether small time 'driveway dealers' or the branded franchises.  It's not necessarily anything to worry about, just be cautious and verify that he's telling the truth.

I have a ways bought privately.

Why pay  thousands extra because a spotty youth has wiped the car down with a damp cloth?

Sell him your pristine example. In fact, give it to him (and a few bob to take it away)

I merely part exchanged a car that I didn't particularly want for one that I did...

Besides I Hpid the new one and carried out the other checks to my satisfaction

The advice is sound, the choice of car and the deal as a whole are matters of personal choice

We've done it ,my son/wife are now the proud owners of a Corsa cdti ,everything seemed to check out thanks everyone, diesel noises take a bit of getting used to especially after driving the mig after James has sorted the various belts

Congratulations. Joining the ever increasing band of satisifed Corsa owners. Apart from leaking water into drivers footwell issue, they never go wrong leaving the owner to concentrate on important things like debadging, blue LEDs and grey alloys.
