That rings a bell... but wasn't certain if later 3.0s were four wire as well :-\

I would say doubtful as they all use the same Motronic 2.8.1 Engine Management.

As said, DBW uses 4 wire, older ones use 3 wire.

You could in fact use either (assuming its the same sensor type) and adjust the wiring harness to suit, as the only difference is the 4 wire ones use an additional Ground (or Neg, Earth, Chassis  ::)) for the Signal Return, the 3 wire ones shared a Earth return on the Heater Ground wire.

The whole thing is grounded anyway through the outer Lambda plug housing via the Exhaust Manifold to Engine Block, hence how the older 1 wire ones used to work.

Thanks for the explanation Chris,I'll certainly bear that in mind, probably get both as I'm going OCD and starting to hoard parts, because as we all know you can never have enough parts in the parts cave ::)

Tend to find the difference between a lot of them in the same range is simply the cable length and occasionally the plug. You can buy them without a plug an solder your existing one on.....  :)

^this^

In fact, unless it needs to be wide band sensor, imo the universal ones do the same job

On that basis your need 4, Front and Back (as there different lengths) x 2, (2 x 3 wire and 2 x 4 wire), to be honest, if you want save some cash,  just a Universal One, or get 1 x Long 4 wire one, will do, your suppose to cut them to length anyway, so while you're doing that you could could configure it for a 4 wire or 3 wire plug.

Whilst its nice to have a spare, its not the end of the world when they fail, EML or Spanner light on and normally runs a bit richer or weaker till there replaced.

I'll send my Bank details over later Ken, you've obviously got too much of the stuff on your hands.   ;D ;D ;D
