HP G70
« on: 20 February 2015, 17:20:53 »

I've recently fixed up a dead HP G70 laptop that I've had kicking about with new screen hinges and cable.  :y

However, the other issue that it had was it wouldn't start up properly and 9 times out 10 I'd just get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.  The battery was dead as a dodo so I've removed it and now my G70 works fine, although only on mains power.  ;)

So it seems that the dead battery was preventing it from starting, or is it just a battery thing?  :-\  ie if I buy a new battery will that stop it from starting as well?  :-\  ::)  Why would the dead battery stop it from starting up when plugged into the mains?  :-\

I'm not that bothered about having a battery to be honest as I plan to use it a desktop anyway and with the nice big 17" screen it's good for watching catch up TV!  :y

So why even do anything about it :)

Sorry, sounded flippant  :-[

The fault could be in the battery, or the charging circuit. No sure way of knowing if new batt would resolve...

Hence, if its good enough as it is....   :y

Because I thought you'd be intelligent enough to tell me why it'll work without the battery but not with it!  :P   ::)  ;D

Nothing wrong with a bit of flippancy though.  :y

Anything can upset the reasonably stable power the laptop needs to boot.  As said, that fault can be a faulty battery (likely) or the associated motherboard circuitry (less likely, but not uncommon).

Do you want to splash out £25 on a new battery to find out, esp when the laptop is worth thruppence.

It was a cheap £10 battery that was in it so maybe it had a fault rather than just being dead.  :-\  Pattern parts! Sheesh...  :D  ;D

An HP battery will be £70+

But don't buy the cheapest Chinese tat you can find.  You will find these have a habit of catching fire when not in use. You can get some reasonable batteries in the £25 bracket.
