knocking

Can anybody give me a idea of what would cause a knock/thump when I go over a pot hole or rut on the road. Its on the passenger side rear.

Broken spring or shock top mount rubbers deteriorated?

Usual sign of dead donut bushes is thumping when trying to pull out of a junction quickly with a little wheelspin.

Actually, donut bush failure was easier to detect on the Carltons cos there was no rubber disc over the top of the bush so it allowed more potential for movement.  Sorry, that's not particularly helpful info is it?

Saloons allow a passenger to reach into the boot via the drop down rear seats, and remove the rubber over the rear shock mount, and feel for any knocking in the shocks.
