Oil "Sell by Date" ??? Does it go OFF (Not OOF !)
« on: 22 February 2015, 16:47:13 »

Hi.

I have a nice new 5l sealed bottle the GM 10W/40.  Purchased from reputable flea bay seller/garage (I assume !).

Holograms check out and label identical to the previous 5l bottle I still have on garage shelf ! so no reason to suspect counterfeit (I did see subtle label difference in other ones advertised so I steered clear of them in case they were counterfeit !

Anyhow, I notice date stamp on the container is 28/01/2014.  :o

Question:  Is the oil out of date ?  Is it OK to use ? ???

Contain sealed up (perhaps a bit dusty !)

Thanks in advance.
Andy.

It took several million years to make the crude oil that your 10w40 was cracked from. You're not going to live long enough for it not to be usable.

It's for quality/stock control. If the container was sealed, then open it up and use the contents. Opened containers are what you should be wary of, as you cannot guarantee what is inside.

Its probably an American thing, they drink anything over there.  ;D

We have to have best before dates on Bottled Mineral Water due to that, even though as Nick says took thousands of years from the water to feed through the minerals.  ::)

As long as its not been contaminated it will be fine.  :y

Thanks to all  :y  I feel reassured now  :)

May wait till next weekend now to change her oil.  WET out there and dont want to disturb her from under blanket and open garage door - poor girl may get her nose wet and bumper may catch a cold !  ;D

I once answered a similar question with a similar reply ....... it was then pointed out to me that 10w40 is synthetic .......  :-[

Except 10w40 is semi-synthetic, of which aprox 70% is mineral oil.

If it was years out, I'd be more cautious, but I'd use that.

Oil doesn't stay in mine long anyway
