rasping noise in park and low speed
« on: 24 February 2015, 23:42:03 »

1998 3.0 auto estate elite

i have a noise when in park idling  that best can describe  a gtating rasping nouse similar to what you get if a backplate is rubbing a drum or a  worn pad on a disc. It there when i switch to reverse but stop  when i select drive .
Im sure i can hear it when doing around 10  mph or less .
Now im thinking cv  but why when its in park is it there but not in drive.   I know ciuld be number of things and without hearing it  difficult.
i have had an issue of it  nit moving occasionally when at junctions or lights after coming to a stop hapoened twice on a hill start  i have to give it bit gas and it goes but its  not smooth  take more like something locked then firced to realise.

Havent had chance to jack it up or anything  crazy weather  where i live  snow heavy rain windss n blue sky

Others on here will undoubtedly know far better than I but my first port of call would be to check gearbox fluid level and while under car have a general look round at prop shaft, drive shafts etc. to see if any of their joints are suspect.

If it happens stationary in park, then nothing's moving past the input section of the gearbox.

I would check fluid in the autobox and also drop the front sump on the gearbox in case the thrust washer has disintegrated.

We have seen the driveplate fail on a few cars, too, giving odd noises from the bellhousing.

Didn't DLK have something similar when a flex plate was shagged?

I have a complete auto setup sitting on my garage floor if you need any parts.  You can have the lot for £75. Where in Scotland are you?
