Golf 1.6 1999 problem
« on: 28 February 2015, 14:26:06 »

Hey guys - my other car is a Golf (as in title of thread) - it runs sweet as a nut until it gets warm, then it coughs, splutters, revs drop, judders and conks out but always restarts, then the cycle starts again.

Any ideas?

The coolant temperature sensor is a common VW failure & cheap to replace.

SWMBO has a 1999 Golf 1.6 Automatic. When she bought it someone had glued a sliver of wood into the throttle body to prevent the idle control from closing fully. That was done because it wouldn't idle, it wouldn't idle because the coolant temperature sensor was faulty.

Ideally you need to get the car hooked up to a code reader and check the live values. I used VAGcom/VCDS to diagnose SWMBO's Golf.
