Whilst under the car this afternoon, I noticed oil in the places shown. It was not copious amounts, but obviously not supposed to be there. Hopefully the pictures will give you an idea where its coming from. It looks to be coming from the back of the round thing that is behind the two things with bolts on the ends. Does that make sense !!!!!!! I assume the round thing is the gearbox.
I do not seem to be losing lots of oil, but just a bit.
Any ideas

Firstly, there should be a rubber bung in the hole between those two bolts - that's the access for bolting up the flex plate.

Pop the other rubber bung off and see if any red / golden or brown fluid drips out, if it does it's highly likely you are loosing ATF from the input shaft seal.

I assume you mean a bung is missing from that big hole between the bolts.

Red is atf but could also be historic coolant leak with fresh engine oil...

If atf it could be coming from the power steering plumbing, but gearbox or crank seals likeliest culprits

I jet washed the underside of my engine as I too have oily deposits in the exact same area but had completely forgotten about it untill I read this thread.. I'll have to go and have a look to see if its come back... Thanks for reminding me

Just checked it after a week... And yup its got a dribble of oil there... I simply say this... Bugger

Trying to convince myself that things are not so bad, let me throw this one at you......

I have read about something called the oil cooler. I think I read that involves oil and water loss. Do you think there is any chance it could be that. I do have a slight oil loss and a slight coolant loss. And I do mean slight, but its there. There are no puddles of oil underneath on the floor, but........when I had my MOT done, there was a patch of water under the middle to nearside of the car on the floor. I had topped up the water, possibly a bit high. Would that be over flow (car driven 3 miles) or related to this problem.
I'll try to get the car up on ramps so I can get under and degrease it and check for new deposits and colour.
When I checked it yesterday, it did not seem to be red. Just seemed like oil.
Incidently....the car runs sweet. And by other threads, I think HG can be ruled out.

I think this will have to last till Wycombe meet, for an OOF expert to diagnose

Ive just wiped the area to check colour of the oil and its not as red as the power steering fluid but still has a reddish look to it.

Sorry to sound thick, buddy....but where did you look to check the red colour

  Ignore my stupidity...you have been underneath again. So Power Sreering fluid is red...what about gearbox oil, is that red too.
