Emissions MOT - criminally high
« on: 16 April 2015, 11:36:30 »

The question:
Will a now-cured misfire that caused massively high emissions, have stuffed the cats, or now the misfire is sorted, will she have sorted herself out completely?

The story:
So... the lady went in for her MoT, and after hundreds poonds spent she failed on bulbs, washer fluid, noisy handbrake drum (serviced it the previous night, buugger! ah well) rear shocks and emissions.

Everything now done aside from
rear shocks (three minutes per side, hehe)
handbrake

She was misfiring terribly on the way there, thanks to father's the previous owner's bodge of chopping into the Omega loom, fitting a Vectra DIS pack, and the subsequent use of chocolate box connectors which failed. On investigation a wire had pinged out.

Spare Omega dis pack, and section of corresponding Omega loom now installed, and she's like a sewing machine again!  :D

But.... as per the question, I now worry - should she have a run to 'blow the cobwebs' or will she be ok straight off the bat?

I'd be tempted to stick a bottle of cataclean through and take her for a good italian tune up on the way to the MOT station..

Normally you can get away with it if you haven't driven for miles with a misfire IME.

Two bottles of injector cleaner, fill with V Power, aim for 240 miles from a tank, repeat and make sure it's hot when it goes in for the test :y

Inspite all the shite mine has been through, it's still on the original cats... So personally I wouldn't be too concerned :y

Ok, cheers  :y

So... she's ran on idle for however long up the drive as I was messing around trying to get her to run right, then driven to and from the Mot station, approx 18 miles round trip. Hoping I'm ok.

Only snag with running her around the place is she's still SORN so obviously only covered if I'm going to or from an MoT station.

Much appreciated for your input, chaps  :)

Wouldn't the injector cleaner throw off the emissions more, though? Sorry, not massively knowledgeable on the science of the stuff, just pop a bit in 'every now and then' but never shortly before mot, though.

Ideally you put in the tank before you get it tested...

I would be tempted to acquire some before you take it to the test, go via a Shell garage on the way to the test and rag ten bells out of it on the way :y

Yeah, what Al said.. not that I could condone taking anything but the direct route to the test station, of course. I've never once missed my exit on the roundabout and 'had' to barrel up & down the A329 to make the test on time..  :-X

I understand  :y

Much appreciated. Just a handbrake mechanism to 'short-term repair' (going to be the only bodge on the car  >:(, but it's only until I can replace the backplate/dust shield/paint the suspension etc) and then rag her gorgeous nuts off on Sat morning. Let you know how I get on!  :)

Just had a thought - and need to know - the timing was done recently by me and a mate. He has done one before (Omega V6, not just 'a' timing belt!) and so I basically let him do his thing. Only afterwardsthinking, the eccentric 'discs' which are on some of the idlers - there's a mark on them which you're supposed to line up a few mm apart from another mark near them. Could these being out (if they are of course, they could be spot on) be throwing a high emissions? She may be running lean or rich?

Now I'm worried about that, because it'd mean stripping the whole front off just to check. Of course asking here first, as I don't want to even attempt that the day before the mot, as I've got a full evening as it is! Thanks chaps!  :)
