What does this sound like? And what affects it? Ie cornering or braking etc...

Also apparently these don't show any play in the wheel. Is this correct?

You talking generally or omega specific, Chris?

from what i've seen in the shop we've had two cars with front bearings shot....weirdly NO NOISE but 12 and 6 play was stupidly obvious.

my ma's ford fusion rear drum bearing went and at 25-30 there was a properly loud rumbling noise.....but NO PLAY. however spinning it by hand on the ramp was a horrible loud grinding sound that was a lot more than the sound of pads on discs.

so what im saying is... could be noisy, could be play but not necesarily together

dont see why they should be any different tbh.

but as to your initial post... if one's noisy it wasnt during braking or cornering.....noise was constant at certain speed (i.e. really loud 25-30 then got quiet at 50+

Could be,seem to recall that Entwood had a diff go on his Omega which made a similar noise

Yes I remember Entwoods thread. He diagnosed his by jacking the rear onto stands and running the car in gear. Which I have done. There's no noticeable noise I can hear anywhere.

...but as the wheels are unloaded in that instance I sort of presumed towards wheel bearing.... Thought occurs, wheels will also be hanging so not in the usual position as far as position of drive shafts etc. so not conclusive.

Hand brake adjusted.
Discs and pads checked and lip on discs ground flat on both faces.

It's not brakes. Although brakes dulls the noise slightly.

It does lessen slightly in left handlers.

It's not a constant noise. Woom woom i "think" in time with wheel speed not prop speed.

Im having the same problem diagnosis , i thought mine sounded like a scraping noise though  Brakes checked , serek seemed to think it was the diff

The three I've done had lots of play and moaned worse than a wife. A noise that got louder and deeper with speed.

Its a weird sound but if not brakes or bearing, could it be wheel or tyre related as it did quieten down on a left turn.

Drivers rear tyre is slightly out of round/not seated correctly perhpaps, but noise seems to be more to the left/passenger side which has slightly more tread, and I can't fault the trueness, it runs perfectly round.

Tyres are Conti sports contact 3 and while not very quiet as tyres go, they have never made a droan in all the sets I've had. Those other makes that did, like linglongs (sigh) where quieter at speed and progressively louder as you pulled up to a stop. Like undoing a zip at decreasing speed. This starts quiet and gets louder from 20mph up to its loudest at 40-50mph where it's gradually drowned out or becomes a constant.

If a tyre noise I'd expect it to be present at all speeds and worse under load, like braking at the front or acceleration in the rear. But only side load has a slight effect.
