car was on ramp no play on bearing to make sure, drive shafts off, brakes off no noise from bearings area
EMD: pop round one day next week down my place I have spare diff here we can try
Thanks serek , ill give you a ring in the week and come down
It does sound like the diff .. is it the diff crown wheel or something that wears ?
After a saga and a half I eventually "proved" the diff on mine was the culprit using the following technique ... BE WARNED .. SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT .. IF UNHAPPY DON'T DO IT
Jack rear of car up and place good quality, substantial, axle stands very carefully to support the body
Using two bottle jacks placed under the lower shock absorber mounts jack the rear wheels up until the drive shafts are back in their "normal" position and not "hanging".
Ensure the drive shafts and wheels are totally free BEFORE taking the next step
Start engine and place in gear - in my case drive, which went straight through the gears and settled at approx 30 mph !! - the rear wheels will now rotate.
Listen at the wheels/diff for any unusual sounds, in my case the diff was quickly noted to be making odd noises, but in order to eliminate each wheel bearing in turn I got under the car and pulled on each handbrake cable in turn to stop the wheel on each side. IF NOT HAPPY BEING UNDER THE CAR WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AND THE DRIVE IN USE - DON'T DO IT. In my case the noise from the diff got worse as each wheel was stopped, which, to me, proved that the diff had serious problems.
Replacement diff fitted all went quiet.
AS SAID - IF NOT HAPPY WITH VEHICLE SECURITY DON'T DO THIS, many years ago a friend was killed when his car fell on him as he was working under it with just the flimsy car jack supporting it, I do NOT wish to hear of this happening to anyone, anywhere, let alone an OOF member
