Aux belt tensioner warning signs...
« on: 03 June 2015, 17:37:42 »

Had a bit of a squeaking from up front today. Had a feel round the aux pulleys and the tensioner pulley has a little bit of play in it. not enough play to make a tapping noise when I pull on it. but a touch of play no less.

I presume it's not meant to? thus really needs replacing?

They have a little bit of play in them, re grease it and carry a spare belt and pulley with you, just in case. ;)

out of interest if the tensioner dies and/or the belt was to relieve itself of its perch one day....whats the likelihood of it shagging / interfering with the cambelt too?

+1 and an easy job for a man with your capabilities!  :y

If it did come off, I'd have thought the cam belt cover would give adequate protection?  :-\  :)

My tensioner pulley bearing became very noisy a couple of years ago. I regreased it and all was well for about a year.
Then without warning the pulley disintegrated at motorway speed, without any warning at all. After this occurrence, I would be tempted to renew the pulley rather than regrease it and assume it will be ok for evermore.  :-\

There have been instances where an aux belt has got caught up in the cam belt run, down by the crank pulley.

Aux tensioner pulley is available separate from expensive tensioner assembley. About £11 iirc last time. Or 15mm socket on a long handle to re grease once the seals are popped out with a small flat blade. But I found once they need grease they don't last long.

Might just be belt noise from cold though. They do that, I blame the Kevlar bead if visible on the belt edge, rightly or wrongly. :-\

Thanks boyos,

Definitely take on board all your feed back and yeah its a p*ss easy job and to be honest I want to get rid of the SAI pipework so I'd be killing multiple birds with one stone if I did it.

And for good measure i'll replace the aux belt too as I did go to change it two years and they sent a wrong sized belt andi never got round to re-ordering it  :-[

oh and get a feel of all the pullies whilst im there as im blaming the tensioner but it could be alternator, WP etc etc so a bit more diagnosis before I commit to new parts.....although only a little  :D
