How much oil?
« on: 06 June 2015, 15:21:55 »

Car has leaking cam covers-I was going to do them this afternoon but it's too blustery round here to risk having bonnet up,so hopefully will get them done tomorrow.Last time I used it the check oil message flashed up at motorway speeds but disappeared at town driving speeds, should it do this? However in case I get same message in future how much oil is then needed once the message appears to bring it back to the correct level? Is there a recognized amount or is it a case of keep adding some until dipstick shows you've got it right?I just don't want to be overfilling it.

Depends exactly where the warning come up on the dipstick, it varies slightly from car to cat going by some old posts.

Lower level to upper level on the dip stick is one litre. Which is the most reliable way. Mine comes on half way down the dip stick, measured 15 mins or so after engine off, so will trip the warning slightly below that.

If it's anything like mine, then the level sensor is just paranoid. Drive mine with the oil level anything other than fully topped up on the dipstick, and the level warning comes on every few miles. This makes it useless as a proper warning because I see no reason to add maybe 0.1l oil just to stop it. I do occasionally  check it properly in between the annual, 10,000 mile(ish) oil change.
