boot gas struts died overnight?!
« on: 15 August 2015, 13:17:17 »

Puzzled, my boot has been fine on the estate we used the car yesterday with absolutely no signs of tired struts boot was not heavy and if my wife can open it fine then there is no issue, but this morning I tried opening the boot only to find just how heavy a boot is on an estate! it was impossible to keep it up and load push chairs in and out.
Any ideas can they both really go that quickly?
Only thing I could think of was that it was quite cold this morning as opposed to fairly decent temperature recently, again could that of masked failing struts?

Could be that, allthough, I never had any troubles with those in the cold weather, even in freezing winter (-10 <---> -30) they are working fine, but are bit stiff, so don't force them open too fastly. My bonnet gas struts died last summer, when the bonnet was littlebit open due some repairs for couple days, have you been keeping the boot lid open only a littlebit for some time ? Those gas struts should be always either fully up or fully down, the gas may leak, if they are partially open. :)

The struts on my car have done similar...been fine for 3 years and now they wont hold the tailgate up ,it comes slowly down! Only fails on cold mornings at the moment but I expect it to get worse....just bought a new pair of struts but not fitted them yet.

Never heard of boot struts going because the boot is half shut and anyway I have no reason to jam door half open its either closed or open.

My boot does not slowly come down if let go it drops with like a dead weight and as previously said the boot has been fine till yesterday.

I've ruled out cold morning anyway as I tried in full sunlight when it was 20deg and its exactly the same.

I realise it looks like new struts but would like to know why they both failed over night!

Any evidence of the tailgate/rear end being shunted? Might not be immediately obvious if you've a towbar... :-\

Could be one strut had given up ages ago, and was working on just one. Which then failed....

Same thing happened to mine both failed overnight, how they communicate to each other is the real mystery? The temporary prop is a piece of wood (for over a year) the bonnet prop is adjustable old hover pipe.

Replaced mine with brand new pair on ebay for less than £11 delivered  :), not worth the risk of propping a boot up with wood etc and having it come down on you  :y :y

As soon as you feel a bit less resistance you should really think about changing them. You definitely don't want an omega tailgate landing on the back of your head. I ain't kidding. And, if you can't be arsed doing it for yourself, think about the others that use it. I reckon it would cut a small dog clean in half.

Or.......if you can't stand the sight of your wife.......and she uses it regularly........ :-\
