Spotted Near Swindon
« on: 12 July 2008, 21:51:05 »

As i was going to the Reading meet just noth of Swindon on the A419 at the bottom of Blunsdon hill there was parked up on the central reservation what i thought was a speed camera van. The traffic came to a stop due to the roadworks that is taking place there at the moment and as i inched along i noticed a police officer looking at all the cars whilst talking into his radio. It turns out the van was running the Reg check thing looking for un-taxed un-insured cars, the scarey thing was they were doing a brisk trade  :o a car full of young lads were looking rather sorry for themselves as i inched past.

I had a motorcycle cop follow me most of a mile after one of those vans a couple of years ago!  OK, so I was in a ratty J-reg Rover 214 that really looked like it shouldn't pass MOT.  ::)  In fact I didn't even bother trying the next year, just drove it straight to the scrapyard.  ;)

Once the database search came back he turned around and left me alone.  :y ;D

Sounds good to me.  Untaxed and uninsured drivers are an absolute menace to all us legit motorists.  If they are breaking those rules, what else are they are up to; no MOT, unroadworthy and therefore dangerous vehicle, unregistered (stolen from factory, etc) vehicle, etc, etc. >:(

Let the police catch all of them and may the courts impose realistic penalties!  :y :y

I agree with you Lizzie -- another way to look at it is that those of us who do pay are also paying a premium to "cover" those who don't -- in theory, if everyone paid their dues -- the burden on each of us should be lighter

The metal processors next to where I work are doing a roaring trade in cars, and not just old bangers. This week I have seen a rather nice clean looking S reg Vectra Estate, an X reg Peugot, several BMW 3 series, and assorted others. THing is quite a few do get driven up and just left, so they are basically road worthy, yet we are scrapping them. Its a strange world !

I get stopped and questioned all the time when back in the UK, and its not because I flaut the law.  When stationned in Germany you technically export the car and have it BFG'd, given a new set of plates and registered on a different system to the DVLA although its a UK number!
Guaranteed a stop at Dover Port by the Customs fellas (a quick flash of the ID card sorts that one out) but when caught by ANPR it always takes a while as coppers have no idea what BFG is....  >:(

Easy 'clean up' on those offences; must look good on the force/Home-Office stats.! ::)
