Car tax renewal on-line
« on: 14 September 2015, 09:57:44 »

Am I being paranoid? The new tax on-line facility requires completion of a Direct Debit form, even when paying in one lump sum. Call me cynical, but I am unhappy at signing anything giving a DD to the Government, given their abysmal IT track record, as I am concerned that they may automatically take tax next year, whether I wish to tax the car or not. I know I can cancel the DD once this payment has been taken, but I am still unhappy with the arrangement.
Any thoughts?

PS It is possible to pay by card also which obviates the requirement for a DD, but I am still suspicious of this. >:(

I understand your paranoia though Shack, as I don't like this business of having to give your NI number when checking your Driving Licence details.  ::)  :(

I'm just opposed to giving a direct debit to the Government for anything! As I don't trust them not to abuse it, albeit by accidental IT mismanagement. :y

I pay monthly for both now, although pay bike in one go. It's been very reliable and works well  :y

I'm sure you can pay with credit/debit card if you're paying the annual amount, without any bank details required, but, you can also sign up to pay annually by direct debit. I remember the site being a bit confusing in this regard. ::)

Persevere, Shackeng. I'm sure you can do what you want to do.

Shackeng did mention that - but that he also doesn't trust paying by card as it's the gubmint..

By it must be tough living somewhere like the UK. :o Most other countries have your bank details and utilities for example can and do take money from your bank account without your permission. Though you gave implicit permission when you took out their service.

I hope I can just pay online when our Corsa tax comes up in November

Ahh.. I see. I guess you could throw a few £50 notes at the black helicopter that's bound to be hovering outside?

What was so very wrong with a small informative disc located in the corner of the windscreen?

A quick glance would make you either cry (tax due at the end of the month) :'(........or smile (eleven months tax remaining) :y

Without this little disc most people have no idea when their tax is due until a letter from the DVLA lands on the mat. What a lovely surprise......not. :(

Bring back the tax disc. :y :y

....and as for all this crap of having to tax a car before you can drive it away. This causes yet more problems. >:(

It's the double tax when a car is bought and sold that pisses me off!  >:(  Bastards!  :P

I wonder how many people are actually bothering to tax the car before driving it home?  It's not like DVLA are efficient or anything...  ::)
