I have used avast for years, never had a problem with it and it updates definitions every day. Do get some pop ups from them now and again asking if I want to buy the pro package but that's the worst of it.

AVG, avast, both resource-hungry bloatware, but if it's only a backup computer.......

OK, can't say I've noticed an issue, was much happier with avast than the Norton the computer came with.
Will wait and see what suggestions othes  come up with for free anti virus that is hopefully less of a draft on the system.

microsoft security essentials.  free, basic, doesn't try and sell you stuff all the time, always compatible with windows unlike market leaders like kaspersky sometimes (apologised last time and gave me a refund)

Yep here too, MSE in the background and a full blown scan of Malwarebytes once a week.

MSE is good enough, but will always show as vulnerable on XP due to the OS being EOSL'd

agree malwarebytes is great and seems ok on top of MSE
