You beat me to it HC!  I used to sell printers in my Office World Superstore and it was on the ink cartridges that we made our profits.
Lexmarks where the one of the most expensive cartridges in terms of price and cc of ink actually bought, with a handsome margin.  Lexmark printers gave us no more than a 10% margin, and sometimes as low as 5%.  The cartridge though up to 40%.   :y :y

The zero margin printer at £19-99 now hooks you into buying profit generating ink cartridges. ;)  But such is life, and we all have to, even refillables and generic cartridges! ;D

The down side is they are sent out with test cartridges, and when you replace them you will be posting back here for a completely different reason.   :-/

Just get a bulk ink system. I have a huge vat of ink connected to my Epson. No more overpriced cartridges for me. :y

always cheaper to buy new printers, but i found if you use an ebay business seller for your replacement cartridges, if they dont use trackable postage you tell them you havent recieved them and they send you a fresh set ;D

.. and then there's the trick we used to play at university. Buy a printer from Argos, take it home and have it working 24h for a day or two printing out theses, then take it back and tell them it didn't do what you wanted. ;D

I did actually do that with a carpet shampooer.  Bought it, did the carpets, cleaned it out (but it had still quite obviously been used) and then got a refund.

However, the shampooer did turn out to be pretty useless lol so was fully justified.

RE printers.  I've tried them all.., Epson x2 (always stop working, however much u pay just as the warranty wears out).., HPx2 (bought two cause they contain printer heads on the ink cartridges rather than in the printer - what was breaking on the Epsons) but they worked no longer than the Epson - in fact the second one I only used for a few months cause changed from XP to Vista and it turned out to be not Vista compatible inspite of being very expensive.

Last time I bought a refurbished all-in-one Canon printer for £64 (RRP £150+) from Ebay.  The guy didn't send it for a month, then when I'd given up, sent it and took the money from my account so I ended up paying £90 in bank charges lol.  Not my most successful venture ever lol.  Thank god its still working.  It does print out cd labels on my <cough cough> downloaded movies etc rather nicely tho lol!  Manage to get original canon cartridges from ebay too (for a good price). After having a lexmark and it stopped working when I refilled it, I've never gone for anything but original cartridges since.

I've got an old HP laser printer (4MP I think?) that was being replaced at work - must be nearing 15 years old but goes on and on..  I think I replaced the toner once for about 40 quid but its good for several thousand pages.
