2000 2.6 petrol manual saloon CDX with sun roof
Rear passenger carpets sodden, no obvious cause. What could it be?

Front carpet wet or dry? It can be due to blocked pollen filter housing being blocked & the water finds its way to the back.
Sunroof drains go though the boot .... by the spare wheel well on the passenger side. I had a Manta once where the sunroof drain was partially blocked, if it was left leaning to that side, the water would eventually overflow the sunroof aperture and directly onto the front seat.  :-\

Front carpets dry, rear o/s dry.

Door seal? Sunroof drain at the top? (..... the bottom of the drain is near where the first aid stowage is.)

I had exactly your symptoms, front dry, rear soaking and it was Andy's first suggestion - skuttle drain totally blocked. After heavy rain, the chamber cilled with water and entered the car via the ventilation system. Why dry at the front? My driveway has an upward slope!

Saw it on one of tunnies cars a few years back, there was a hole in the chassis. It looked like a drain hole, but clearly wasn't, so must have been a strange shape/spot weld on floor, which water was able to get up into, then the undercarpet sound deadening soaking it up like a sponge.

Hole sealed, I believe that completely solved it.

Once you've sorted the leak and dried it all out, how do you get rid of the manky smell though?  :-\

Try some charcoal in a tray for a while, someone did tell me coffee powder on tray works well but can't remember if it was suppose to instant, freeze dried or the real stuff.  :-\

You can't beat Neutradol for this, as it absorbs the smell rather than trying to mask it with another. I've heard of hotels using it to make a 'smoking' room into a non-smoking one.

Copious and repeated use of the vacuum off powder is a good start, and then leave a gel sachet in the footwell. I've done this on several old cars that had been standing for long periods and smelt damp and musty. It didn't take long for that to improve.

I have checked the front drain, some leaves in there, have hoovered them all out and put a stiff hose down he hole so it is clear now. I have looked unde the rear floor and there is not hole in the floor. I have lifted the carpet, it was sopping wet, mopped up and placed a bowl beneath the carpet allowing it to drain and eventually dry out. I suppose I must find the source of ingress by playing a hose around the door seal.

Are the door drain holes clear?I've known cases[not on Omegas it must be said]wher door has filled with water until it runs over top of door pressing then between door and door card and hence into footwell.Off the wall suggestion I know, but there for what it's worth.

Check the inner wheel arch behind the wheel near where the suspension arm passes, this a common area of corrosion along the seam and will let plenty of water in to the footwell.  If you lift the rear seat up you can see the seam and check for corrosion there too.

Thanks for suggestions. There is a grommet in the lowest point of this floor area. I hoped it was a sort of bilge pump, but it seems to be an ordinary plug. Oic follows.
