suggestions please...wanting to spray a rear boot spoiler with spray cans.....spoiler flatted with wet and dry...2 layers of primer applied and flatted between layers.....then applied paint ..two layers and looks nice and even finish.....now need to apply the clear cote ,,,,so do i flat the top paint cote before applying  the clear cote,or do i have to apply one more top paint coat and then apply the clear cote onto the paint while the paint is still sticky...

That wasn't meant sarcastically, but moving on: are you using a basecoat and clear system, or adding clear just to achieve a shinier finish?[size=78%] [/size]


With base and clear, the two parts do very different things; the base is ONLY there to provide the colour, and the clear gives both the glossy finish and the durability. If this is the case, the clear will need to be applied within a certain amount of time(so that it crosslinks) and you do NOT sand the colour first. I've recently applied some Lechler BSB, and the clear can be applied any time from once the base has dried to the touch(easily checked on the masked areas) to 24 hours later. This is pretty typical, and I hope answers your question.

Thanks Nick  that has indeed answered my question in full thank you.....strangely enough there were no instructions on the can as to..when and how  to apply ,,apart from the normal....make sure its clean...wipe all traces of grease and dirt from item,,  spray form about 10 inches ...as the spoiler looks good with the paint applied and i am chuffed with my attempt i did not want to spoil it by doing something wrong...like flat it if i do not have to.....so i will proceed to apply lacquer and then see how it finishes and then still be chuffed or not..but at least i have given it my best effort..once again thank you

Before handling the spoiler or attempting to fit it, leave it for about a week so the paint has a chance to cure, otherwise the finish will be knackered with fingerprints...

You need to start using better paint! Move up to 2pack and you'll be unmasking within hours then colour sanding and buffing the following morning.

Its the lacquer I use that takesa ruddy age to cure fully. I use a 540...? lacquer thats supposed to be 2 pack lacquer..?

I'm assuming this is a rigid spoiler,if it isn't plasticizer will need adding to the laquer to stop it flaking off,in the case of rattle cans that may be difficult unless a can is available with it added
