Will it die?
« on: 18 December 2015, 13:33:28 »

I have a Christmas dilemma that I need help with.  ::)

I've bought a friend a large Aloe Vera plant for Christmas but as I'm going away on Tuesday it needs to be boxed, wrapped and delivered on Monday, but it won't be unwrapped until Friday on Christmas day!  :(

So will it survive in the dark for nearly 5 days? or should I get her to unwrap it on Monday when I go round.  :-\

Jeez life's difficult sometimes!  ::)  Thanks for your help lads!  :y                                                                                   ;D ;D ;D

Is it just me that thinks an Aloe Vera plant sounds like a Yorkshire native? In which case it will bitch and moan until you take it back there.

Most plants will survive 5-7 days in a box without any problems, that's how they get sent by post anyhow !!

Important things are .. water well and allow to drain before packaging, do NOT pack sopping wet or bone dry !! Package carefully to protect leaves from damage, once damaged they don't repair themselves and can be any entry point for rot or disease. The two MOST important points are dead simple .. keep upright and keep cool. A cool - not COLD - plant goes a little dormant so is far less likely to suffer from yellowing leaves (lack of light) or drying out.

Never done an Aloe Vera plant but have done many fuchsias ...

HTH

Edit .. quick read in the plant book on Aloe Vera plants .. they should be left to be almost dried out between waterings ..  so they stand dry conditions very well and will not suffer if that happens whilst packed for a week

:)
