also have to take into account the OOF, this forum has save me so much  money.

I am servcing my car at trade prices, i suspect a clit or VW Polo would be more expensive to maintain!

Now that tunnie is one hell of a point! I got the estate (aka the-state) had every will to do the work myself... which I did, however, I wandered what vx would charge for the same! Just to see what a rip off it was.

needed; cam belt (and waterpump) cam cover gasket collant change, plugs, breather clean, and throttle body, oil change and filter, air filter.

vx - £1200

I did - £175

It pays to be in the right place  :y

Tunnie - you are forgetting some people do slightly more than you 20m round trip to Bicester every day...

Diesels generally start to cost in (if buying new) from around 18k per year - that figure will usually be lower if buying 2nd hand.

Keeping ours while viable to do so.

Wont be long before there is no point to a well performing car, be too many cameras / black boxes recording everything.

We have every intention of enjoying them while we can.

These mig's go on for years, big reliable engines, to get a similar condition small car, it has to be newer, and therefore more expensive.

Migs = cheap to buy, resonable to maintain, reasonable - dear to run.
corsa = expensive to buy, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to run.

I want a big practical fun car.  I need to fully load it up from time to time.   I know where I am staying!

Now LPG, that is becoming appealing  :y

Come on jimbob, join the LPG crew, you know you want to!

The quicker you do it, the more you'll save  :y

Even so, with the resources this forum gives people to save money, i think the off set of derv would be quickly gone in service bills.

Sadly not, I worked out that even by taking a company car in diseasel format, it would not pay off

Seem to recall that depreciation aside, I would save 1600 quid a year with a diseasel when doing 20K miles per annum.....and thats without depreciation!

My car is (almost) my only (well .. main) vice ....so I am keeping it. I like to drive around in comfort in a car with presence --- my dad can keep his baked bean tin (clit) ---- I don't burn £25+ a week on cigarettes, or filter the same in booze through the old kidneys, so I will spend it on fuel and tax (thankyou GB) -- as luck would have it I just escape the retrospective tax hike -- unless they tinker with that and take the date back further.

Thats my take on my meega too! I dont smoke, dont drink (much) but i do like a big, fun car!!

only so long as LPG continues to be considerably cheaper than petrol.

Once it gets to about 80% of the cost of petrol it will stop being a viable option for a lot of people.

Me, i am not selling mine, even though it is going to cost £400 to tax, i do 30K a year at least and like to travel in comparative luxury, like many others i have no other vices aside from the occasional pint

Actually, with the heavily increased price of diesel, my figures are out of date from when petrol and diesel similar priced...

£1.6k saving a year is not to be cast aside - we're not all young, carefree, with a roof provided by parents ;)

There are valid reasons not to lpg...

The powers that be are openly trying to get us all into little bland boxes to lower our global/carbon/emission/footprint or whatever they're calling it this week. What they don't & probably never will understand is that to some folk their car is also their hobby, not just transport. I only cover 3k a year, equate that to a "friendlier" car covering 10 or 20k a year & that p*sses on their parade. I no longer have a wife & children to run here there & everywhere when i don't feel like it & i do'nt hop on a plane once or twice a year for holidays.
Just to clarify, i'm not having a pop at anyone (i'm open about it if i am) but sick & tired of the media telling us how we should'nt run gas guzzlers when they clearly hav'nt researched properly.
Not ranting but admit to having a chip on my shoulder!!! ::)

okay....we all know i am the social outcast  ::)

MV6 had usual rust spots, it annoyed me immensly. Wanted also a newer car but couldnt find the MV6/Elite that I wanted. Decided to go elsewhere as I got the FSH Jag Sport for A LOT less than you may think.

My sale had nothing to do with costs - obviously runnning an AWD Jag-Deo.

Just replaced wifes 2.5 CDX Facelift - with a clit 182Sport.

Again its newer and for her town only runs it actually saves money. She is sitting on 37mpg today from it, and it still does a 0-60 time in under 7 seconds.

I hang my head  :-[

...But admit i still miss the MV6 despite the Jag doing nothing wrong, having stunning acceleration and great looks ( matter of opinion i know)

Ok so i go out and buy a new oil burner, prob need to pay around 10k for something nice.

Saving 1.6k a year on fuel doing 20k miles a year, going to take 6 years at least to get your 10k investment back.

Then you got to take in depreciation... which will nudge £1k/500 a year..

So saving say £1k a year?

Retail service costs...

There is money to save no doubt but its hardly going to be big money! Have trouble getting anything near 4 figures...
