Im after a drill press , just a workbench top type .. not one of those industrial ones  Something sturdy but one that you fit a standard electric drill into  Oh and a bargain would be a bonus  Anyone got one and where from ?

Be careful of the cheap shite, or if using a mount for existing drill, if either part is cheap.  The problem is how central and straight the whole system is when drilling. If you get vibration in the drillbit, the whole thing is a bit pointless.  Well worth spending a bit more for quality IMHO.

Certainly worth getting a proper one, but again avoid nasty stuff

Keep an eye on your local auction houses as it's the sort of thing that pops up from time to time.

I was looking for a drill stand, but decided to go for the benchtop pillar drill instead. I paid about £80 for mine. I am glad I did get it. I have bolted it to the end of the bench. Its not massive but it does what it is supposed to do.
Pricewise, it was not much more than a sturdy stand.
I think Screwfix do a Titan pillar drill for about the same price, which has good reviews.

My vote would be for a pillar drill as well.  They are quite reasonable now and most go up to a 13mm shank, so generally ok for general use.
It's only if you are using the larger taper shank drills that you would need anything more industrial, although I must confess to reducing the larger bore shank size at work so that it is suitable for use in my pillar drill at home.

Even a sub £100 cheapy pillar drill from B&Q is a massive improvement over a drill motor and clamp.


But you do need to always clamp your workpiece to the table.  You might get away with using a really heavy vice, but trips to hospital really aren't fun.

I saw one in Aldi a couple of weeks ago, at the time I thought 'Hmm, that could be useful' A couple of days later I went back with the intention of buying one and they'd sold out  They looked good quality too, might get em back in at some point I hope.

Well i ordered the above and must say im very pleased with the product , its precise and accurate enough for what i need it for . Very well made and considering it has the vice clamp included is a bonus  Not everyone's choice but thought i would just say in case anyone wondered about buying one
