Network rail still uses the clas 37's although there are loads in Toton yard at the moment for disposal.

The Class 37 is actually pretty light (about 100tons but, not that powerful though) so can pull freight loads along some of the lighter duty lines (i.e. scotland and some of the goods branches) where a 60 or 66 would be to heavy.

In fact, they were re-building some at Barrow Hill for scottish use very recently.

Local to me they have, 3 class 20's, 1 class 25, 1 class 37, 2 calls 47's and 1 class 56 most of which are fully operational!

37 is a very good design, very long lasting, second most built BR Diesel design after the Brush 4s/47s.

When I was young I used to hear them working freight trains at night and the nearest railway was around 2 miles away.

The railway I am a lapsed member of have ownedat at various times

2 x 03
1 x 08 (left)
3 x 14 (2 left)
1 x 20 (occasionally borrow another to get a pair)

1 x 26
2 x 37

That clip is very popular with the 37 fans - in fact I uploaded it due to comments of people remembering that weekend.

Only sold 4 DVDs from these adverts though :(

I remember the Watercress Line was used to train up crews on the new rolling stock for the main line when I first moved to Alton. Lack of electrification was coped with my inserting an old diesel electric loco in the middle of the train as a generator. I could hear that from my then home (1 mile away from the line). It was a bizarre sight seeing a train of brand new Siemens rolling stock with a smoky old diesel in the middle (it was smoky, too!).

I wonder how they connected the gene-loco up to the traction-unit; through the ETH cable perhaps?

I love BIG diesels, my friend has a preserved Class 40 and also (my favourite) a Brush-Sulzer 47.......the latter; I`ve had the pleasure many times to drive.  From a standing start (W.O.T) to a very scary 'flat out' 95 MPH (many years ago when such things were possible on B.R). ;)

I have since 'passed-out' on the 47: `have my driving permit c/w MGR, steam heat and ETH endorsements......Ahhhhh, Happy days!:y

If the EMUs were standard SR control they can control a 33/1 or a 73.

And when did you drive for BR then Debs?

 :o No, I didn`t at all! :-[

I had a close-relative whom was a top-link driver based at Mollington St. TMD (Birkenhead).....many a happy day in my yoof spent in the left-seat (under his tutelage) with me there; under the seudonym:  "S.E Condman"....even though he was driving single-manned ;D

Since than, I have had an affinity with railways (big and little)....`got my driving permits on a friend`s preserved class 47 loco :y
