Pop the aux belt off, and start car, checking for noise. If its no longer present, either belt, or one of the devices it turns. If still present, you need further investigation.

Obviously don't run it for more than 30s or so with no aux belt, as waterpump wont be running.

Did as suggested....ironically, I could not hear the noise in either circumstance :-\
For the moment, I'll have to put it down as one of life's ironies :-\
The engine sounds as quiet as a church mouse now. Sitting in the car, its hard to distinguish whether its actually running. So I don't think there is a major problem (at the moment) and I think lubrication was slow (be it water or oil) to reach its destination. :y

Since it was stood for a while... could be a hump formed in the belt around the tensioner which took a little time and heat to straighten out since its so cold outside?

I always aim to run a spare car once a week. As baggers points out in the above 'battery drain' thread, after one week standing a car should start, after two it probably won't. Internal battery leaks, small consumption (clock, alarm, radio, etc.) drag it down. Leave it 6 months and all sorts of things go wrong; flat tyres, brakes sticking on, etc. A neglected car can get damp inside, grow mould, mice can nest in the air intake, etc.

If road legal I take the spare for a local journey of 4 miles or more, to get the oil and exhaust hot. If not road legal, I run the engine for 15 minutes and run it up and down the drive.

Apologies if you already do this, but you did day it had been standing for six months.
