It's actually a rather lovely story, engaging my sloppy side for a second, and I wish you the best of luck. As has been said a while ago, any omega will easily swallow up several hundred quid on the major jobs (which you're already pretty familiar with) camcovers, front suspension, rear arch, cambelt/timing, rust, etc..
Without starting a little separatist 'Judean People Front' splinter group, if you're after a PFL, I'd say go PFL. It is fact, however, there are far more FLs out there. (oh, by the way, 97-99 models are retrospectively referred to on here as 'Mini Facelift/MFL, 94-96 = PFL, 2000-03 = FL)
Honestly, it's a case of just keep hunting around, you
will find one. But of course if I or anyone else on here, I'm sure, hear of one, we'll let you know.
