2.6 V6 2001 Various Fault Codes
« on: 11 February 2016, 13:05:56 »

My old girl (2001 2.6 estate) has recently started misbehaving. I've done a code read this morning and found the following:

1700 - service vehicle soon request from transmittion control module

0500 - vehicle speed sensor malfunction B-009

0390 - Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected

0303 - cyclinder 3 misfire detected

Car had been running fine and doesn't feel to have a misfire ticks over great, set off from lights this morning and car juddered bringing eml light on. Rolled it into lay-by and switched off, gave it a minute then restarted with no eml on. Drove car rest of way in and no problems.

Any ideas people or suggestions?

Oh and in another weird scenario was manovering into my drive and turning the steering and the steering almost locked on turning then there was like a cracking noise (plastic sound) from the steering housing and it then drove fine. Then two days later it did it again but afterwards the air bag light came on??.....any suggestions with this?

Check the plus on cylinder 3.

The cracking was your airbag squib behind the steering wheel going for a burton

Thanks Mark, is the squib part of the airbag or can you change it separately?

To replace the squib you need to take steering wheel off. Part No. V0009152056 £72.00 with trade card

Well this gets weird. I decided to strip the old girl down this morning to look for the reason of the misfire.

On doing so I found one plug complrtly loose and could turn with my fingers. Took all out and cleaned then refitted and rebuilt. Coil pack looks fine however it does appear the cover gasket is starting to weep a little.

Reconnected fuel lines and started engine, left to run for ten minutes then moved her back out onto the road and turned her round. On parking I re-did codes to find only coded 0300 and 0304. Plugs looked fine, however I will go pick another set up asap and try them, otherwise looks like the coil pack is failing.

Unusual thing was the rest of the faults had disappeared 🙈

My old girl (2001 2.6 estate) has recently started misbehaving......

0390 - Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected

0303 - cyclinder 3 misfire detected

I assumed this was a mistake and took it for 0300 random misfire anyway.

......
otherwise looks like the coil pack is failing.......

Any hairline cracks or rust on the main body of the coil pack?  I assume switching it off and back on again reset it temporarily as this is what happened when my coil pack went.

If it's been stood for a while low voltage can look like the car is having a fit... Various warning lights will leave codes until they sort themselves out... 0300 is the typical misfire early warning, closely followed by the 030X as the ecu figures out what's going on ;)

Only worry about the other codes if they rematerialise...

Ok thanks chaps, I think I will change the plugs first. If that doesn't cure it new coil packs, unless anyone has any known working ones spare in their garage 😂

Just check the TCM and ABS for codes as well, due to the P1700 ;)

Ah, ok, cure the P030X ones, then if any issues, get gearbox and ABS read :)

The pedal trick only works on the engine ECU.

The P1700 code says that the gearbox ECU isn't happy about something (but it might just be unhappy with info it is getting from the engine ECU so investigate the engine fault codes first before paying to have the gearbox codes read)
