rattley V6 - top end??

hi, i have a simular problem to what i have read in this thread, maybe someone can help?
me and a friend bought a 3.0 v6 engine from a guy who was stripping an omega (auto). Since fitting the engine it has got a vary bad rattle on it, which sounds like its from the top end.
it cant really be identified to one bank, alough it sounds worse at the rear, i have stripped all the HVA's down, cleaned them and freed them all off, but it hasnt really changed. there is generally alot of top end noise aswell - could it be poor oil supply to the top or low pressure? any idea's?
this engine also had rust forming on the cams before fitting it, hva's were siezed with burned oil, and the bores had imprints as if it hadnt moved in a long time  >:(

Howdoo....  Recon the post above needs a thread of its own so will split it to its own.

Is the engine in an Omega, Vectra, Astra or Corsa now??

The engine sounds as though it has been very badly treated, so from what you say may require at least more than just a head strip down.

I am not sure if you have given the engine a complete strip down, but if it has been sitting around long enough for rust and "flats" to appear on surfaces, what are the little and big ends, etc going to be like? :-/ :-/ :-/


The rattle could be however down to engine mountings being mis-aligned or loose. :-/

omega to vectra, i could just turn out to be worn lifters, but they all felt fine, and would rather not replace them all if theres an underlying cause..

forgot to mention, i done the head's (new stem seals, reground valves, checking all parts etc) then put new piston rings in and horned the bores out when seeing the condition of them.. big ends were fine too

Sounds like its had a hard life as LZ says.  At the least, would try flushing clean VX semi synth through it with short - 1k miles - changes and see if the detergent effect makes a difference.  Would avoid specific engine flush treatments as they can cause more probs than they solve by dislodging accumulated crud all at once, blocking minute oilways.

After rereading the original post I have slightly ammended mine.  Just in case you have missed the change I have added:

But as Hotel confirms, I think a complete rebuild is the better option as the engine was neglected.  This should avoid some very expensive, or even terminal, engine failures. :'( :'(

It it's all been rebuilt it will take some time for the lifters to fill fully. Might be worth checking the oil pressure just to be sure that you haven't got a blocked pickup or stuck relief valve though.

If it's had new rings it really needs to be driven under load to bed them in.
