The Pete's G. guide on replacing the HBV was extremely useful and I thank him as it helped me today. :y :y

The only point that I would question is emptying the system completely of coolant as he suggests you should.  As the HBV is above the level of the resevoir and raditor, being above the rear of the engine that should not be necessary as I found today.  Replaced HBV without losing anything more than a dribble of water, then just topped up system thereafter. ;)

Obiously if enough coolant has leaked, or the mixture has become unbalanced or just old, then of course replace it all anyway, but no need to replace just for the sake of it I suggest. :y :y

Just my opinion of course as I see it  ::).  Would welcome observations on this though. :y

Correct, no need to empty coolant in my mind, unless its due a flush anyway, or youve been topping up the leak with pure water (tut tut tut)

If it's got the correct 50 50 mix to start with then you can just top up with likewise regardless of how much you do or don't lose.

Having said that, if it's due, then it's not a bad opportunity for a coolant change.

I usaually change the coolant when I do cambelt and water pump, as I can drain and flush the block too...

Personally - and some say I do overservice my cars - I look at any coolant system work to be a good excuse to empty and pop some nice fresh in...
