Bastard to start when cold.....
« on: 20 March 2016, 17:53:38 »

My omega is being a idiot when first started for the day...

Basically anytime of day or night, first time to run my Omega and it takes a lot of cranking for it to start...

Once its been started, its OK for the rest of the time - day or night....

Could this possibly be choke related maybe...? Like its not switching on upon first start and then OK once its ran....?

I'll plug my code reader in once I find the connection lead/interface for my laptop.....

Any help or suggestions gladly received....

It doesn't have a choke; the ECU uses the coolant and air intake temperature sensors to emulate the choke functions far better than you can. It won't be either of these.

You are looking at a fault with the more fundamental engine sensors/wiring; crank, air flow or cam sensors.

Or your fuel pump is weak.

Coolant temp sensor?
That'd be my bet too.

CTS makes sense..... it does seem to be giving the symptoms of flooding.... :y

I shall go get meself 1 and give it a try..... would it also cause rough tickover/hunting.....?

Still learning about V6's and injection systems....

Thanks for the help folks :)

OK so I changed the CTS for genuine brand new.... problem still there....?

Its a bit easier to start, not as many cranks, but still giving symptoms of flooding...

When started it spits out black smoke which to me indicates overfuelling....?

The idle has gone back to 'normal' and sits around 5-600 RPM.... it used to sit at around 9-1000 RPM which TBH might have been me trying to combat another problem where the engine wouldn't idle for any amount of time so the ICV got changed for a new Bosch item....

Might it be the FPR.....? it's got the standard type fitted at the moment, I do have another off a 3.0 which I can only presume is the same as the 2.5.....?

Swapping parts at random is a waste of time and money. Get the car connected to a code reader that does live readings and see for yourself where the problem lies.

Do you know if your car is OBD2 compliant? I thought all facelift cars were but I am not sure about cars built before 2000 :-\

If it is OBD2 then you can read live readings using a cheap adapter and an app on your phone - £15 for the adapter - £7 (IIRC) for the scanmyopel app on Android.

Trying a new CTS is hardly 'swapping parts at random'  ::)

Perhaps :-\
The symptoms are equally likely with a failing CPS as a CTS
I was really suggesting what to do next. I consider changing the FPR to be a bit random. A functional code reader costs less then a CPS and probably no more than a CTS (not sure how much for an Omega because I have never had one fail £20?)

I have a cheap code reader that will do live readings but my laptop battery is knackered and will only lat around 5 minutes when not plugged in LOL

I do have the bluetooth adapter for the phone app, but my Omega isn't OBDII compliant, unfortunately, so the plug in dongle won't even look at the ECU....

I think I have a cam sensor spare somewhere, but I can't see that being the problem as I think it would go into limp mode when it fails....? (If thats what you mean by CPS...?)

Can't harm anything to change it can it....

Ah OK, sorry thought you meant Cam Position Sensor LOL

But surely if it was Crank Sensor that wouldn't stop it from starting when cold... but would when its warm (usual symptoms on 2.6's)

Think I might have 1 of those somewhere too....

Looking back at when I have had crank sensors fail there were occasions just before they failed when the engine didn't start first time. It didn't seem significant till afterwards.
The crank sensor wiring goes brittle and often doesn't survive being transfered from car to car so I still think you  would be best using the code reader to read live values rather than swapping sensors :-\
