How Honest are You? Inspired by Debs
« on: 21 July 2008, 19:31:35 »

Further to the thread about Ebay Debs touched on honesty (in her usual articulate and erudite style that I can't hope to match)

Quote
With the greatest of respect; one cannot be "a little bit honest".....for, honesty either exists or doesn`t.

Anyway, it got me to thinking how honest am I.

I'm afraid I would have to answer with the rather ambiguous "reasonably honest"

A couple of years ago I found a purse of a young girl, aged about 18, with about 60 pounds of cash, plus all her credit cards. With help from the bank, I managed to get the purse back to this young women who was elated.

Did it ever dawn on me to steal the money and throw the purse away. ABSOLUTLEY NOT. But if I found £60 on street without identification, would I hand it in at the police station. I would not.

If I saw an old lady drop her purse or I was given too much change at the supermarket, I would willingly give it back.

However, if my bank made a mistake in my favour would I let them know. NO WAY.

If I was offered a brand new/television stolen from a warehouse, would I be willing to accept it , quite possibly. But if I knew it had been stolen from someones home. NO I WOULD'NT

So I think I'm a "reasonably honest man", but I certainly do not have angel wings and a halo

Just how honest are you? :-?

I am generally honest to the point of stupidity  >:(  Found a roll of banknotes once, in the street, and did hand it in -- not entirely out of selflessness -- but also the worry that the nearby CCTV might have seen me find it !!!!  Paranoid too !!!

Trouble is I have learnt that, in this day and age, the honest are the downtrodden.

My ex used to laugh at me cos if a sign said "Don't walk on the grass", I didn't !!!

I am afraid I also take my litter home in my pocket if I can't find a bin.

I am no angel --- but will not, knowingly, cause others distress to further my own ends.  I also, apparently have this pathological inability to lie convincingly  ::)

Of course, it is up to you, dear reader, to decide how much of the foregoing you believe ............

I'm with Debs on this one... Either you are honest, or you aren't. There can be no inbetween.
Have always been brought up to be honest and truthful, and done the same with the children. Told them, if you want people to be honest with you, be honest with them. How would they feel if someone 'lied' or 'cheated' them??  That's how others would feel if they did it. simple!

The same with 'respect',  you need to show respect, in order to gain respect. Respect is not something that is your 'right' to have, it has to be earned..

Personaly, I would like to think I am totally honest..

Just how honest are you? :-?

Many thieves/burglars might steal from a neighbour but not their own grandma......a shoplifter might steal from a large-store but not the corner shop.......the insured might inflate an actual claim for loss but not fabricate a non-existant loss.
All represent (modern) moral and ethical dilemmas for which even people whom consider themselves 'basically honest' would struggle to immediately identify with one 'right' point of view.

In former days, when belief in religion held sway over people`s day-to-day moral/ethical behaviours; such 'decisions' were easier.....God, The Law and peer-pressure all combined to form (a notional) ethico-moral framework.
Now, respect for faith, the Law and for individuals (familiar & stranger) are seen by many as a derisible weakness`....with former social barriers to 'bad' impactful behaviour yielding to 'gut feeling' honesty; "What feels the right thing to do".

Drip, drip, drip.....each (even small) dishonest thing 'we' do to others, lessens and diminishes us as individuals and all of us as a collective society.
Where the ultimate end point of this 'moral-flexibility' is, I don`t know, but I fear the Escape From New York" scenario might be the outcome; with the 'dishonest' banished to a living prison world, loosely of their own making.

I feel there is goodness in us all, no-one is born dishonest/amoral.....but, we all face decisions each day that require the choice to do right or wrong; it is still our choice to do right. ;)

You certainly have your views Debs, and I respect them.

But you do seem to paint a very gloomy picture of man/womankind.

I think it is far better to accept that as human beings we are flawed and not perfect, and quite frankly the idea that any human being can be so perfect as to be totally 100% honest, 100% of every day, month and year, is unrealistic.

Good people do bad things, and bad people do surprisingly good things on occassions. The pursuit of human perfection can only lead to misery ;) :y :y

Honesty increases with age. As you get older the fear of being caught becomes much stronger.

I`m in no place to judge....for I too am a human and regularly 'found wanting'; but to strive for honesty, fairness and to do 'right' should be every human`s goal.....even if the attempt sometimes goes wide of the goal-mouth. ;)
