It's a simple matter of preparedness and a bit of pride... fix faults as they arise along with a bit of preventative maintenance and you'll have no problems...

Treat the MoT as an annual fault finding exercise and you will be presented with a long list of stupid fails that could easily have been avoided/preempted

Wiper blades, washer fluid and tyres should never, ever, be seen as advisory items let alone failures. Simply inexcusable imho

Emissions are the one item that worry me. My 2 litre Omegas, fitted with after market catalysts, would fail year after year and I eventually resorted to fitting a special cat section to them before the test. They are all scrapped now, but I have two 2.2s and one failed last year on emissions (lambda of 1.12), eventually cured with a change of MAF.

I only use premium fuel in the 3.2, which also seems to help keep the breathers clean, as whenever I look at them they are spotless, and never had a problem with emissions. The TD gets a dose of Diesel magic and an Italian tune-up before the test, and it always passes emissions.
