Took the old bus for a 240 mile trip. Four people plus fully loaded boot and 600 litre roof box fully loaded. 1999 2.0 16v saloon.
40 mpg at 65 mph brim to brim. 
Who needs a diesel?

Btw the car used to only do 28 mpg but I did lots of oil changes, 1 Wynns tappet treatment and 16 tanks with redex in. It was a neglected clunker owned by an old fella who sadly passed away. Rescued by me and nursed back. Interior and exterior have seen better days, but I am quite fond of it now.

65mph average would be quite good going, 65mph tops I would rather put my hand in my pocket and pay for the extra fuel to have some fun and get there in less than forever.....luckily in my old slug I have to do neither!!

No fun to be had on the motorways these days. Two incidents on way back. One car somersaulted on to its windscreen - big queue. Incident two - One car towing a caravan - caravan on its side and car sitting up in the air on the tow bar. Lots of queuing. Doesn't fit my definition of fun but each to his own.
65 is best speed to cope with lorries and bad car drivers. You can see what they are about to do and avoid them. Too fast and you get stuck behind them.
