Miggy Alternative
« on: 08 June 2016, 18:10:21 »

Depending on some potential new work, I may seriously consider a new "used" car.

My requirements: Estate. Auto. A Bit of poke. Big load area. OK for long trips to France etc. Reliable.

Took the MV6 to south of France last year. Went great and no problems. But it's beginning to look a bit tatty, minor scrapes etc. Radio CD not working properly, little things that add up to quite a lot.

Thinking (only thinking at this stage) about maybe a Volvo XC70. 8-10 years old with 100k or less. Quite a few around. Any thoughts ? Petrol or diesel ?

Petrol 2.4 or T5... E class might be a safer bet, S211 model rather than the S210 shitter ;)

Later Vectra C ('06-'09) also worth a look, but avoid the 2.2 engine (petrol or diesel)... Personal suggestion would be either 1.8 petrol or the 120bhp 1.9 diesel. Key point with the Vectra suggestion is that boot is about the same size as the Omegas, and the estate has a slightly longer wheelbase so gives decent rear legroom... Noteworthy if you travelling 4/5 up :y

Surely you would get the level of refinement with a common or garden vectra though? Not exactly smooth and effortless like the superior omega.  ;D

Not rusty either... ;D

Design Spec is pretty good... Climate, electric windows all round, electric tailgate, half leather...

Quite. I looked at Vectras some time ago, one big thing for me was the single CD player and other little touches.

I have a question. Often models of car are referred to by numbers like S211 and S210, not just with Mercs but many others. How does one tell ? When a car is advertised it usually is something like E230 Estate Auto or something, not S211 or W124  ???

One has to be a bit nerdy and sad and not get out much to know all that stuff.
Al's an expert.  ;D

Starter for 10...

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-Opel-Vectra-1-9CDTi-16v-150ps-auto-2007MY-Design-/231972994514?nav=SEARCH
According to that ad, the MOT expired in February.
Good point well presented  ;D

Would expect to pay around £1,300-2,000 for a nice one, especially if a '58/'09 plate :y

That one will cost a minimum of £5487 as he's after finance customers mugs only!  ::)

Not sure that Rog fits into that category.  :-\  ::)  ;D

I would go for an e class or 5er bmw. Similar size both also a lot more powerful

Or go s class or 7er if you want rwd then maybe an a6 or a8 if you can let go of superior rwd

5Series tourer boot is a joke, nice Merc estates are stupid money and the rest of the list are all saloons ;D

Will find a nice example of the Vectra when I get a minute ;)

OK. Suggested budget might need a rethink, nice, late ones seem to be north of £3K...

Try this as an idea...

Al's not wrong about the 5series, it looks good until you open the boot, especially if you're used to using the Omega. An A6 isn't much better.

The only real option is a V70: avoid the diesel, and under no circumstances buy an automatic.
