I would keep my options open to include anything and everything*

OK. Suggested budget might need a rethink, nice, late ones seem to be north of £3K...

Try this as an idea...

Ummm sorry I don't think I have even mentioned a budget

I'm thinking along the lines of V70, XC70, 5 Series, E Class, maybe passat, or Audi A6, curve ball Honda Accord.

Solid reliable long distance motorway cruiser. All estate, all auto (sorry)

The suggested part was my initial £1,500-2000 for a nice Vectra C rather than a specific budget :y

If you want to be going posh and auto, then you're only sensible choice has to be the '03 on Eclass  :y

I would go for an e class or 5er bmw. Similar size both also a lot more powerful

Or go s class or 7er if you want rwd then maybe an a6 or a8 if you can let go of superior rwd
5Series tourer boot is a joke, nice Merc estates are stupid money and the rest of the list are all saloons ;D

Al's not wrong about the 5series, it looks good until you open the boot, especially if you're used to using the Omega. An A6 isn't much better.

The only real option is a V70: avoid the diesel, and under no circumstances buy an automatic.

These are nice, but command stupid money!

Shop around...

And before you bleat about the £490 rfl, the £4K saving buys alot of petrol ::)

Prices start at £3,500 ;)

I'd want the 320 rather than 280. Faster & better on fuel  :y

Also that one is not the Sport version, I like the external trim of the Sport and it has fair few less miles on it than that 280.

All hypothetical really, as my next car purchase will either be a Zafira Tourer, Ford Galaxy/SMax or similar  ::)

Not ready to buy anything at this stage, just forming some ideas.

The Mercs certainly have an appeal. And, nobody has said to watch out for particular faults

No real comments on the XC70, which is a strong contender for me. I don't know why  ???

Here's an XC70 comment for you...

It's mechanically identical to the V70, ergo the same things apply, only the handling is more role poly ::)

No experience of xc70, so no constructive comments I'm afraid

How about a Saab 9-5 estate? I've had 2 saloons and found them to be excellent. Some of the comfiest seats in the business  :y

Volvos have the same appeal as an Omega for me: it's intended to be a big, practical, comfortable, sensible car with none of the  pretentious marketing wank( Ultimate driving machine, Let's all pretend it's more than a tarted-up VW, etc) the German competitors indulge in.

My local mechanic has one and that's what he says.

XC70 is AWD, and higher than V70 but not in big 4x4 land.
