Freedom? Civil Liberties?
« on: 25 July 2008, 10:47:05 »

Pages 4 and 5 of The Times today.

On page 4 we have a report on the giant TV screens to be installed all over the country so that the Great British Public can have constant updates on the Beijing Olymic Games.  With sound for 18 hours a day.

On page 5 we have a report on a bloke who got fined for smoking in his own van, even though it was a private vehicle.  Some council smartarse designated it as a "workplace" and fined him £30 for smoking.

I just wonder how many of the GBP actually give a monkey's about the Olympics.  Surely anyone who cares enough about it can bloody well stay at home and watch it on the TV in their living room.  These giant screens are going to cost £45 million, partly funded by the BBC and the National Lottery.  Your licence fee.  Our Good Causes.

I gave up smoking 8 years ago, because it was affecting my health.  It's not good to smoke, but it's your own personal decision.  OK, stop people smoking at work if it affects others, but surely it shouldn't be illegal for consenting adults to gather somewhere amenable and enjoy thier tobacco.  I really feel for the poor buggers who have to stand outside the office in the designated smoking area which is allowed a roof, but can only have two walls.

Who's running this country?  We don't need an election, we need a bloody (literally) revolution.

How do you build a barricade?  We only need a single wall, with no roof, to stand them against!

No smileys.  No smiles.

We don't have freedom, we don't have civil liberties, we are nothing to the idjut in Downing street.

There are a lot of very unhappy people about at the moment it's only a question of time before a revolution takes place.

To put this into perspective.

Labour have just lost their 3rd safest seat in the UK in Glasgow east. A very deprived-run down area where you would think (from a political perspective the vast majority of Labour votes may come from)

That they lost to a similar bunch of wasters is irrelevant, but it shows this nation is in such a mess that even the staunch labour voter is turning against them.

That was a 25p/c swing by the way.

I can't see them managing another term... In fact I wouldn't be at all surprised if they come in 3rd (or worse) in the General election!

I reckon we'll end up with a hung Parliament this time... It was very close last time!!

Freedom and civil liberties are very complicated animals -- often very conflicting too.

I, for one, do not want to be bombarded by the Olympics for the forseeable future --- if there is something I want to watch I will do so, at the time of my choosing and probably in the comfort of my own home.

On smoking .. yes, a guy has the right to fill his lungs with murderous carcinogens .... doesn't have the right to do the same with my lungs!!!

As for the chap smoking in his van ---- new workplace laws apart. That van is probably full of paint, thinners and various highly flammable solvents ..... bloody stupid place to light up anyway!!!!

Cue schoolgirl levity:

"Gordon Brown should be bloody well hung!"...... ;) Whom says he isn`t? ;D

On a serious note:
I feel sickened when I see our personal liberties being stolen-away to serve a completely notional "greater good"....this country used to pride itself on being 'different' and being a nation comprised of 'individuals'....We`re seen now by the people in office, as not much more than "The Electorate"...for that is the only facet of us that matters to them; blagging a 'next term'.

I make a point of asking would-be M.P`s when they tout for my vote near ballot time (for that`s the only time one sees them): "Do you have any 'real' qualifications to do the job?"......`never yet have I had an answer!.

I am a libertarian and a cynic (and a tolerant and accepting non-smoker); and if there were a box so-marked on the ballot paper (and the Politicians REALLY wanted my honest opinion) I would Vote "Non of the Above" :y

That'll be a "no" then  ;D

Why is it that those with principles are also those with no money and vice versa ?  It's a topsy turvy world !
