Advice please
« on: 11 July 2016, 10:09:24 »

Hi all....

I need a bit of advice on the cambelt kits. There seems to be a vast difference in price between different engine numbers. It seems my engine numbers always come up in the dearest section.
How important are these numbers. I always thought that the engines were the same. When James fitted the kit onto my 03 2.6, I just ordered the cheapest Conti set at 90.00. Was I lucky...it fitted perfectly. Never have bothered about engine numbers in the past, just bought by price and make :-[
I just looked a ECP and for my 2000 2.5. they want 157.00 !!!!!
Is there any difference in the 2.6 models, and ....do 2.6 kits fit a 2.5.
TIA :y

Thanks Paul.
In your answer, you have answered part of my question !!!!. Your item states 2000 to 2003, intimating they are all the same !!!!!
Whereas some other sites quote engine numbers. :y

I thought there was a difference in backing plate for the tensioner .. or possibly the idler, but you could swap backing plate from old to new if you bought one that was different.

IIRC wasn't the 2.5/3.0 a kit with two adjustable tensioners and the 2.6/3.2 only one adjustable and one fixed tensioner, also?

Not sure on the 2.5/3.0 but on the 2.6/3.2 it should have 1 adjustable and one fixed but i think that depends on the age of the kit, because my first 2.6 had 1 adjustable and 1 fixed. but my other 2.6 and this 3.2 both had kits that had two adjustable. both kits work fine its just a bit more work on setting them up. Alos as Aaron says you can just swap the back plates if the new one is wrong.

Just phoned Vauxhall High Wycombe....They quote the same part number for both cars...9201887 !!!!!!!
Mind you, their trade card price was £302.03 for the pair....whaaaaat.
I am going to find the cheapest for either and get two :)
Need them by Friday as Nick is doing them on that day :y

Tony, ring the ebay company I linked to, they might overnight them. I also noticed they had a 2.5 gates kit for £80..

I have done a bit of searching, and it appears that both my 2.5 and 2.6 have the same backing plate. I am trying to conduct a live chat with Eurocarparts to see if they will give me discount for buying two kits. However, it seems that no-one is alive at the said factors !!!!!!!!

Tony, the backing plate doesn't matter much, as we can swap the new rollers onto your existing ones if necessary.

I'd be more concerned with getting the correct adjustable(for the 2.5) and non-adjustable(2.6) lower rollers, as I don't know if those are directly interchangeable.

I have ordered two sets from the link Paul put in. I rang the number in Pauls link, and spoke to a really helpful guy, who went through all the details and reg of each car, engine numbers, etc, and confirmed what Vauxhall had said...both cars use same kit. Price was £105.65 ea, but he said as I was having two, he would charge £100 ea, and also send them tomorrow on overnight delivery. Lets hope he keeps his word and they get here.
As regards your comment about the rollers, Nick. My 2.6 engine number falls close to the cut off point for that kit, so I assume that the next engine series use different rollers :y

Result :y
Incidently, the kits are Gates ;)
Thanks fellas....most appreciated for the input.....it has saved me over £100.

As said, the backing plates differ, but can be swapped. All 2.6/3.2 have fixed lower idler, earlier cars have eccentric lower idler.

As said before, any GM V6 cam belt kit will fit any GM V6 engine. GM, Gates and Contitech kits seem most common, but there are other makes on the market at tempting lower prices. Nick says it is usually the tensioners that fail, I can believe that; they contain a tensioner spring which flexes every revolution, as do valve springs. Is there any reason why earlier engines have two eccentric idler pulleys, while later ones have only one?
