How is Boris seen in Europe?
« on: 14 July 2016, 17:35:50 »

Not well respected it seems. :-\

Most of the people he will have to deal with see Boris as a bumbling buffoon at best. Or worse still, a cretin.

Can't help thinking our new PM has made her first mistake. :-\

Was talking to a couple of Polish friends the other night re Boris, I thought their definition of him was quiet accurate.

She's put the high profile Leave campaigners in public positions where they not only have to make good on their promises but show some measurable results, something most of them have never had to do before. If they fail, she will be able to label them all as useless self-abusers, and reduce their power base. If they succeed, she'll be hailed as a master of politics.

The gamble is whether she can hold things together long enough to reach a conclusion.

I think that Boris gives the impression of a buffoon to put people off their guard. This gives him an advantage over them.
Hes no fool, but it takes a clever man to play a fool.I read somewhere that he is fluent in 4 languages, which suggests a brain behind the buffoonery.
This job will either make him or break him. If he is capable of turning into a serious statesman this is his chance to prove it. If he is just a "character" with no real depth, he will soon be exposed.
I think Nick W is spot on in his observation.
I will be surprised if David Davis does anything other than an excellent job. He has been the only Tory who has seriously impressed me for at least 20 years.
Time will tell.

I don't think it matters whether EU leaders like Boris or not.  We're leaving so they're not going to like anyone we send!  ::)  ;)

If May thinks that those whom she appointed can/will take the blame if it all goes tits-up, she does not know politicians - or the public. Politiciams will protect their own arses first and foremost and the public will know that SHE appointed the team to do the job, so must accept overall responsibility; we know where the buck stops.
Boris is NO fool and anyone dealing with him who assumes that he is will be in for a surprise. Hiding in a clown's oersona has served him well up to now, but I will guess that soon he will emulate Prince Harry (Henry 1V, Part 1) and his "reformation, gleaming over his faults, will show more goodly and attract more eyes than that which has no foil to set it off" and suddenly become the serious statesman that he has been keeping under cover until he was ready to take on the top jobs.
From FS to PM is a fairly short step.....

Exactly sir Tigger. It matter not if they do or don't like him. What matters is that we end up from from the EU without damage to our economy in the near future. If those concerned sort that out properly, they will be remembered for generations to come.  :y

I agree with BigRon, I think he has an impressive brain under the - deliberately IMHO - clownish demeanour. I heard an interview with a colleague on the radio the other day, who said he is the quickest brain he knew in reading someones intent. He is also a cunning linguist which should help, as well as having dual citizenship with the US. I think we may all be pleasantly surprised at his abilities in this job. :y

Common sense? It took a great deal of that to achieve what he did as Mayor of London and as representative for London abroad, bringing in lots of business for our capital city.
Does anyone remember the great recent television series that he presented, based on his book "The Dream of Rome", in which he demonstrated deep insight and careful research, resulting in a fascinating and informative documentary.
That TV series saw him travelling throughout the Roman Empire in order to uncover the secrets of the governance of the empire, and the reasons behind why the Romans held such power and prestige for so long - highly relevant for today, I think, and in his new job as FS!
