Just been over my 'accounts' from just after Billing 2014 to Billing 2015... excluding bits I've bought as spares for as-and-when/not fitted yet, service items, and the roof respray, which I can't really count in with 'general use' as that was my decision, for cosmetic purposes, and could as easily apply to a brand new car... my total spend is something in the region of £148...

And service items must come in to, ooh, tens of pounds, thanks to buying my bits via Vx Trade Club, OOF, and ABS. £12 per month!

Happy with that, the only 'hiccup' in the last 12 months was a snapped Drive Belt, which was a 6 month old Genuine GM item which I got fully recompensed for.

It does go to show that a bit of routine fettling goes a long way,there are a few knockers around that go on about flogging a dead horse by driving around in an old car.But some of us don't want to drive what's on offer,and an example of that was a week or so ago when I had to leave my MV6 up at Serek's place, and I hired a car for 4 days, the car was a brand new Fiesta and it looked very nice in shiny black and it had all the bells and whistles,and it did its job and got me home, and then it got parked up for four days and I just carried on driving the other Omegas.Why? no idea, Fiesta just didn't do it for me,nippy? yes,comfortable? yes,economical? 200 mile round trip used £21 of petrol,so it was all yes's,but  could it be force of habit that I have a strong reluctance to give up the Omegas? Also I have a virtually new R8 and you would think that would be the weapon of choice,nope...sorry I still prefer the old Omegas...think I have 'issues' but hey I'm harmless

Oddly enough the Fiesta is one car I just cannot get comfortable in!Not that I'm that bothered as I wouldn't buy one anyway.

Funny enough after owning i think eleven omegas,mainly 2.2....today i decided to have a new car...at the age of 72 although i will miss doing the repairs and servicing after all these years i no longer want to climb under and around the car in the freezing winter and rain outside as I do not have a garage..I could pay someone to do the repairs and servicing but that only adds to the cost of a car that as we all know is not worth a great deal of money..This omega I have had since feb 15 and done loads of work on it and replaced many part and it runs very well..,altough I still love the omegas I feel it is time to move on so by the end of September my new car should be here,,What I will do with the old girl I have yet to make up my mind,,I know I will be sad not to drive her again but we all have to make changes and adapt to those changes and move on in life before its too late,,

I also am well in to borrowed time, and - nearly - got my gearbox off the TD today - it would be off if I had identified that the starter bolts need to come  out -, and I still enjoy the challenge, but I do have a double garage to play in, so that eases the pressure.

I completely agree with all said. Some modern cars on sale today are absolute shockers!!! I hate and I mean hate the latest corsas! I mean a up to the minute car that doesn't have a temp gauge 

Anyways my omega is at the point where I'm doing summat once a month. Generally no real big jobs (apart from the cc gaskets last month..... Yes I consider that a big job and god awful in my opinion)

So I can hack the monthly tinkering / servicing. I actually enjoy it.

What is grating on my tits is the interior rattles. I know it's a 16 year old motor. But when you get in new cars at work and they're "tight" with no rattles it does make me think.

But then I drive my car and realise why I'm still in love after 7 or 8 years.

Buying a 15 year old car is always going to be a gamble; you were unlucky. I bought a 2001 2.2 3 weeks ago, no service record, MOT till April 2017, in Neath, for £196. SKF cam belt kit and water pump £75, 4 litres Dex Cool antifreeze £5, 5 litres TC oil £5, oil filter £3, 1 litre brake fluid £4, total spent on car £92. I handed the car over to son Jonny last Sunday, no complaints so far.
OK, I was lucky.
