I believe mine has one or two ..... never looked  :-\ ..... but never had a problem in 4 yrs or 40000 miles

A stupid idea that is an expensive liability.

To answer your question, Diesel Particulate Filter. It's a filter in the exhaust that catches the soot, which is burned off by injecting extra diesel late in the combustion cycle. If the engine doesn't spend a lot of time in its efficient range, the DPF will clog up, the engine will barely run and you will get a big bill to fix it.

Regarding the DPF, I've heard allot of people with cars like 535d they remove the DPF and have no issues with the MOT (apparently) So question is could you just remove the DPF and if needs be reprogram it out the ECU... I'm just going by what I've read here and there.

Some  of these dpf removal companys use a tin opener to remove the internals of a dpf, which if evident when presented for mot is a failure i believe.
