star silver colour variations
« on: 02 September 2016, 19:29:16 »

I'm currently re-spraying two front door trims and two wing mirrors, the paint code for which is Z147, Star Silver II.
I must say I'm delighted with my first-time-effort results, after the expected minor initial mistakes, but there is a slight difference in the finished colour compared to the original when the items are back on the car.
I've done lots of reading about oxidisation and fading etc. and realise that this may well be the reason, although there are suggestions that the final colour won't be fully apparent until flatting/polishing and waxing is completed. (I haven't done this yet).
The new finish looks a slightly 'greyer' shade than the original silver and I'm wondering whether one of the other 'Star Silver' versions may match better.
Does anybody know whether Z157, Star Silver III, is lighter or darker in colour than Z147?
To be honest the difference is very slight and it might be nice to have all the door and front wing trims contrasting slightly in a different shade from the original.

I've got a prefacelift in z147 and have fitted the rear bumper and mouldings off a z157 facelift and personally can't see any difference.

Z147 is slightly lighter of the two but there not same Silver, 147 has a hint of Blue, where 157 a hint of brown / bronze, you need to view the two colors side by side then look at them a weird angles with sunlight, best done at Sun Set to actually tell the colors apart.

Hi Bill,  I never managed to get a perfect match in my mind but no one else could see a difference, similarly with Z157 bumper on a Z147 car, I think because you know it's different you see it more.  I'll get those bit's down to you soon  :y

Thanks for the replies. It certainly depends from what angles the finish is viewed.
The difference isn't worth losing sleep over obviously. The mirror back is certainly not obvious because it isn't directly next to a panel, but the door strip is a bit more so because it's directly on the panel.
If I do get neurotic about it I will do all the door trims and the front wing trims in the same way. The effect could be quite nice.  :)
Omegod. PM sent re. bits and pieces, Jon.
Thanks again.

Silver is one of the hardest colours to match, even the pros will spend a lot of time with shades and feathering in to the next panels
