"Now is the time to say goodbye - 'Goodbye' "
« on: 09 September 2016, 08:24:27 »

No, not the Peter Cook / Dudley Moore song, But the time has come for me to part with my Elite Estate.

I've had it for 16 years (175K miles), since new. Its been, in chronological order, A company car, a family car, a hauler of large 'stuff' and for the last two years, the only car I have that I can get 2/3 golfers in with all our kit for away games, even though it only got used 5 times a year!

Its also been a 'hobby' in the past, when thanks to this forum, I upgraded my car maintenance knowledge from the '4 plugs and a distributor' tech of my Hillman Minx, to the multiple ECU complexity of the modern car technology. I even bought a  Sealy timing belt tool and Marks DVD, probably the zenith of my maintenance experience! (apart from my sourcing and replacement of the colour sat Nav display - pretty sure I did a 'how to' on that somewhere?)

It is, however, succumbing to the ravages of time, with rust in the usual places and the final straw, a slight weep from the petrol tank. The shame is, its not long since I had a professional refurbish of the alloy wheels,.

Ah well, all good things come to an end. However, as it still has 9 months MOT, when I get time I'll probably advertise it on the forum / eBay as a cheap runner, project / donor car. Who knows, it may even 'live on'

and yes, I will stay on the forum. I'm more of a lurker these days, but don't want to miss any of STEMO's 'nuggets'.

Yes, I'm in a bit of a similar position although not had my Omega from new. In the process of deciding if I hang onto it it or not

Sorry, I don't even want to think about STEMOs "nuggets"   ;D

Well, swapping the petrol tank is not too bad, if it's even that. Have you checked the plate where the fuel lines enter?

So on to the perennial question.. What to replace an Omega with?

Do stick around..

That's the question... the only thing to replace an Omega with is another Omega!

I know you will have already been though this conversation with yourself, but if it's a bit of rust and a fuel tank (plastic, so how it can be leaking, I have no idea. Again top plate sounds the more likely)

You'll probably get mainly calls to 'keep it' from this forum, and I have to say I'm in that camp, too. But your decision of course, and it should be respected. As I say, though the only issues you mention are half a day's work (that said the rust can't be terminal if it passed Mot 3 months since) the rust's more cosmetic, I'm guessing?

Anyway, do stick around, either way!  :)

If it's a rare silver, Fl, bring down ere to hoof'land, and we'll give you @£50 and pay your train home, and if it's a Saturday, might take you for a ruby, at spiceland :D

As a recent member but a long time owner I know how hard it is to keep the old bus. Torn by my head ruling over my heart but luckily space on my driveway isn't a problem and so my heart won.
I go to many classic car rallys and Im often told that Omegas will soon become classics. But apart from that, they are such great cars.

I was stuck with what to do with it when the ECU died. I spent months looking for a solution and then I found you guys.
I cant wait to get it back on the road and hopefully keep it there.

My vote is, if you can, keep it. You'll miss it when its gone.

I think BG's advice is the only way to go,and my advice to everyone out there in OOF land is .....scrap them all! because then just may be, that elusive MV6 saloon interior will come along and I can then be comfortable driving my appreciating classic ;) :)

Christ,it looks like you and STEMO will need to get a room :-X  and as to keeping your Omega....think about this scenario, crank sensor fails on a dark snowy night in deepest Welsh Wales, who ya gonna call?? yup ...buy a F**d and get the Omega towed up to Noofland to be put out of its misery. It's a win win situation for us all...you get fifty quid and I get your front seats (there are plenty of rears on fakebay at the moment)and BG fills up his man cave with more spare parts...heaven ;D :y

As I had a VX cam belt/tensioner kit done at 100K (now 114K), and a cam sensor and two coil packs recently, and have recently got a complete spare set of alloys from Joff. How about I just keep it to play with ? At present just warming it up and moving it up and down the drive about 20 metres now and again. I'll get around to doing something at some stage. Oh, quite a lot of birdshyte needs to get washed off now and again.

But if Opti wants to straight swap his Jag for it, I may just about consider it   :y

A couple of weeks have slipped away, the MV6 is still just sitting at the back of the house, and I'm beginning to think that it has to go. I just don't have the time for messing around with it  :-\  MOT runs out soon as well  :(

I'll probably list in in "For Sale" quite soon (when I can be arsed). Trouble is Carmarthen isn't exactly easy to get to.
