2.2 tdi
« on: 22 December 2016, 18:50:25 »

after doing loads of work on my 2.2 td I posted that smoke was coming from the braided copper earth wire on the starter motor & it was glowing red hot. at the time I was told if the feed wires weren,t getting damaged then the fault is the s/m bushes being worn & causing a short. at the the time I thought I.d change the s/m & would attempt to start. it needs bleeding after new h/g. when I realisied it was not a 5min job as the exhaust was in the way I left it & until this afternoon. then Iv,e only managed to get it out. had to remove  the first section of the exhaust. so tomorrow will easily do it in probably 1 - 2hrs. After all that my mate has suggested it would be better for him to come & bump it off by towing. it has been 3mths stood. starting by towing , good idea or not ?  :-\ :)

Not clear why it needs bumping?

If you have air in fuel, that needs to be cured, as using the starter or bumping *WILL* shag the fuel pump.

Also not sure why the exhaust is in the way. I'm sure I removed the starter motor on my old DTi when I needed to lock the crank to remove the crank pulley without removing any exhausts or manifolds.

the exhaust was definitely prohibiting removal of the 19mm bolt that secures the s/m from bell housing side. the bottom bolt of the two is a torx job which secures from engine side that's easy

so are you implying cracking the system at the injectors to remove any air.  I thought it could be as bad. but I am not in your or probably the majority of members on here league. I seek advise & usually have to.  if there is any other way please let me know. thxs

Yeh, best to fit a priming bulb (after the filter) and crack the fuel pipes off the injectors and prime it until fuel is seen at the injectors. Do not sit on the starter as this will damage the starter and is likely to damage the fuel pump as well.
