Opel Admiral A 10/65
« on: 25 December 2016, 19:28:11 »

Oh what a mess!

There was a Admiral A on ebay this evening. Condition was not so bad, little rust, bad painting but complete and with acceptable interior (early version with 2.6 OHV engine and two colored steering wheel). Engine was running, brakes OK.

Nice winter project, I did a Diplomat A in the 90s and I know how to do.

But my personal limit is 2000 € + some coins in the moment. 3 Second before ending a guy placed 2510 €. No chance for me...

Waiting for the next chance...I love KAD A ;)

Hi Baza

I am the biggest fan of the real last big Opel, called K (Kapitaen), A (Admiral) and D (Diplomat). There where two series.

The A series was build between 1963 and 1969. Kapitaen, Admiral and Diplomat had the same bodys, but differences in detail. 1963-65 standard engine for Kapitaen and Admiral was the 2.6 OHV engine (100 PS). The Diplomat was fired by the V283 Chevrolet V8 engine (4.6L / 190 PS). The V8 engine was optional on Kapitaen and Admiral.

1965 was an update. The 2.6L OHV engine was replaced by the 2,8L CIH engine. 125 PS with single carburetor, 145 PS with double carburetor (2.8 SH). For the Diplomat the 5.4L V8 engine was optional.

Also a Diplomat A Coupe was launched, build by Karmann in Osnabrueck. Very, very rare today and only available with the 5.4L V8 engine. 2 Prototypes of the Diplomat A Coupe are converted to Cabriolets. One of them still exists.

1969 the B series came up. It was a revolution in wheel suspension and brake systems. The KAD B series used the most expensive rear wheel suspension: De Dion.

Brakes: Ventilated disk brake round around on the V8 and 2.8 E models .  1969!!!

The 5.4L V8 engine (230 PS) was only used on the Diplomat B V8. All other members of the series had 2.8L straight six CIH engines, carburetor / injection 132 PS...160 PS.

The 2.8L straight six was later converted into the 3.0L used in Senator/ Monza A/ Omega A. Top of the line was the 3.0/ 24V, based on this old engine with a 4 valve head, used in Senator B and Omega A. Lotus in UK set the i point, the 3.6L Biturbo. The worldwide fastest limousine at its time. (Lotus Omega)

Just had a look for it on Ebay but couldn't find it.
There was a pale met. blue one in Ayrshire in the early ninties owned by a gentleman who bought it new . I bought the family Kadet C coupe from him and he told me that he had it delivered to Iran where he was working in their Oil Industry ,and then drove it back to Scotland . The car had suffered from the Scottish winters and had at some point had fibreglass wings fitted to it but was still in overall good condition. I asked to be offered the car if he ever decided to sell it as at that time I was heavily into Opels owning 2 manta A's ,1 x Manta B , two Kadet c coupes and the only known 1957 RHD pre production Rekord Olympia P1 .( now in Switzerland ) .
The years passed and work took me away from home and I never heard from him again so don't know where it went to .
When I lived in Toddington I was offered a black 1953 Opel Kapitan (luton ) which was an ex South African embassy car but was just too far gone for economic restoration with many rare and precious parts missing.
The biggest mistake I made ( well maybe that was not buying the Ascona 400 for £7000  :-[) was walking away from a lovely pale green Rekord Olympia ( Amersham ) for £500 . This had been featured on the series Heartbeat and was road ready . I was renting a house at the time and just hadn't the space for it.
Ho Hum..

Hi Olympia!

The auction on ebay was ended on Dec. 25th. Here is the link:

www.ebay.de/itm/Opel-Admiral-A-2-6-10-65-/332066279596?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D38052%26meid%3Da3185e2fbced42f787c537cb6e976907%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D302170047914&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=NBdPD0Do%252FWJZTks02NecXrqjIKs%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I grew up on the backseats of big old Opels - Admiral and Diplomat A and B. My first own car wars a Rekord C. After a row of of Granadas, I came back to Opel in the early 90s. I bougt a Diplomat A to restore. I drove the Diplomat two summers. Later was Senator time. First A2 models 2.2i, 2.5E, but I lived in Berlin that time - no chance to find a garage..

After settling over to Lahr I found a place to work on my cars again. I drove Senator B 3.0 i /24V for many years and 385000 km cross Europe.

But sad times came up and I lost nearly everything. Nearly? My Rekord C was saved by a good old friend. The C is stored in a garage near Verden.

Personally I found back to Opels big old rear drivers a second time. I am a Omega B enthusiast. Love the cars.

But the first cut is the deepest.....
