abs ecu
« on: 07 January 2017, 10:45:46 »

Ok, It appears the speedo gets impulses from the abs ecu, mine is knackered. Im thinking of disposing of the car completely as this sounds very expensive, or could anyone suggest anything first that might be worth doing? many thanks. Les.

Changing it is a job that will cost some time and blood, but isn't particularly difficult.

Repairs to your unit are about £150.

A replacement should be a bit cheaper, but it needs to match your car.

But, as always, have you diagnosed the the fault properly?

hi there, i have not diagnosed my problem properly, the speedo keeps dropping to zero, then jumps up and down, sometimes it works fine for a little while and then goes dead again. I was thinking to change the speedo cable but another guest suggests the car does not have a cable and that the speedo gets impulses from the abs ecu, ive heard of it, I don't know where it is or how to check it or anything like that. circa 150 is fine, I was thinking like 800 or more. Any more excellent suggestions Nick?

You need a new instrument cluster. Must be from the same engine, ideally the same size wheels and same body style ;)

Car doesnt have a speedo cable, its electronic and takes pulses from the gearbox to determine the speed...

It might be you need to replace the ABS rings or even just the sensor....

I doubt it will be instrument cluster, they are quite robust in their design...

Had two fail on one car.

Apologies for shouting, simply to differentiate notes ;)

I had this on my MV6, when the speedo dropped to zero the ABS light would come on and the ABS didn`t work pointing to a ABS ECU failure.

If your ABS is working while the speedo isn`t working then it will point towards the instrument cluster, if it isn`t working then it points toward the ABS ECU, simple to test, quiet road while the speedo is playing up and jump on the brakes to see if the ABS is working or not.

Ok, one question at a time...

When the speedo drops do any lights come on?

great reply re test, i do not get any lights come on ever, so i will check out this test, so basically, if the speedo dies and i slam the brakes on, if the car goes into a skid then this points to abs eco fault and if the car goes into anti skid then that points to cluster, so really all answer are good. I like the test plan first. many thanks

As said, you need a new speedo. Must be same engine and as before ideally same wheel size and body type. :y

Mine didn`t, can`t see why no ABS signal would have a bearing on the power steering?

Servotronic has a speed input from abs ecu... depends on the actual internal fault... but in any case abs issue = light on 100% of the time ;)
