Its the raw crude they are making the money on, not the petrol and thats high due to the market rpice

You should be thankful, the tax on the profits will be help the miss spending of this current useless government.

Absolutely right Mark, and billions of the oil company profits have to be ploughed back into the exploration for new oil reserves, which are getting harder to find and greatly more difficult to extract. :( :(

As for the Government they do indeed need that extra income to shore up the battered UK economy due to their (Gordon Brown's) mis-management since 1997. >:( >:( >:(

What is obscene is their inability to cut the huge taxes on fuel sales because that revenue they need to maintain the level of public services due to their past over-spending and lack of provision to bolster the Country's financial reserves during the "good times"! >:( >:( >:(

Quite right Lizzie! I work in the oil business worldwide and the main revenue to the oil companies are what are called high-ends. They are the plastics, pharmaceuticals etc! the low ends are the crap what is left ie. diesel, paraffins etc, so the oil companies do not make a lot of money from forecourt pumps. The reason why Mr Gordon Brown and his cronies say nothing is the general public blame the oil companies of making huge profits, not the government. We are not in OPEC so I know for a fact that the government is selling everything it does not need domestically to feed their socialist programs

You highlight excellently Drew the fact that the oil companies make their profits by using business skills at the highest levels of competency and standards, that this Government can only dream of!  Oil companies wisely identify opportunities for their business to create the profits required for the development of their markets, which is to the benefit of those that rely on oil related products now and in the future. 8-) 8-)

The investment is massive and risky over 5 and 10 year business plans, which frankly the current Cabinet Ministers and PM could not handle due to their inexperience at running a business at this level.  That is why they are making such a mess of running GB plc. :'( :'(

The future government MUST have true business qualified men AND women in good measure.  No more amateurs please! ::) ::) ::)

Indeed, that is no doubt due to the Gross profit being so impactful and news worthy due to its size compared to the paltry (in comparison) net profit. :D ;)

However in the case of these BP results they are the "Cost Profit", net of $2,612 million holdings, losses and taxes, etc from $9,465 million to the $6,853 million published as the "bottom line" for the 2nd Quarter, or a fabulous 23% return  :y :y :y

Good luck to this excellent business! :y

Very little of the oil companies profits are made in the UK, it is a global operation and forecourt fuel accounts for a tiny portion of that profit. Why shouldn't they make a profit ? If they were losing money the oil business would be left to governments to run, God help us if that happened.
Public spending must come down, the millions thrown at public services has returned poor value for money.

completely agree ,particularily regarding public spending.the redistribution of wealth experiment has failed yet again.it removes incentive from those it is supposed to be helping and often seems to provide inadeqate help to the genuinely needy, due to the large machinery of state required to organise it.-Give me small government every time. :y

Forgot to mention Lizzie that it costs circa $5-6 US onshore and $8-10 US offshore to extract 1 barrel of oil!!  :o
