Anyone on here an expert on this?

Specifically how to avoid buying something stolen?  Is there a register HPI-stylee somewhere of chassis no.s?

A pucker HPI check and an email to the relevant Constabulary should do the job...

If it's a commercial trailer, ie needs a truck to tow it, then it should be MoTd, which makes a bit more of a papertrail... also, if there's a contact at MID, then they might have a list of outstanding chassis numbers...

Equally, your insurers might also be able to help with this, as they have direct access to the information

Do HPI keep track of Car transporters/Horse Boxes etc then? 

I would imagine it's all too easy to swap a VIN (TIN?  ) plate on a trailer and disguise the fact it's actually TWOC-ed

I guess that's a chance you take... due diligence would suggest a call to the manufacturer to confirm spec/details... suppliers logo might also give a pointer for where it was sold, a phone call/email to see who it's then originally supplied to...

A kosher seller would be obliging by way of accepting a refundable deposit in order to allow checks to be made

If the place you go to buy the trailer, has lots of transits' and caravans, and its priced a bit cheap,, walk away. :of

What type of trailer are you wanting...?

A car transporter type has a chassis tag attached to it, to give maximum weight and load etc... If that tag is missing, walk away.... but does depend on the age of the trailer you go to see..

A trailer for tip runs, will most likely not have any tags as most of them are home built (including my own) and only take a maximum of 1/2 tonne....

There are no 'real' laws governing trailers at the moment and no register to check to see if a trailer is registered as stolen... like there is for caravans via the CRIS register (but thats also only if its actually registered via CRIS)...

The police have been known to confiscate such trailers for lack of plate-age.

Some of the trailers Iv seen that go to the local tip TBH is no wonder they get confiscated....

Rotten wood, bald tyres, wrong type of tyre etc...

   As is mine. It can be filled with water ~1200kg and it doesn't bat an eyelid

Mine only has small axle suspension units on ot with small 8" wheels, I cant even take mine onto the motorway.. It just gets used for tip runs once its full of crap accumulated that can't be put into the wheelie bins...

Its approx 5ft by 3ft so not exactly huge, and when hooked up to the Volvo, I cant even see it let alone feel it on the back LOL

It was worse when it was on the back of the Omega, I forgot it was there until I turned the car round at a bit if a pace and it sudden;y hooked onto the road and sent it flying upwards.... shit me up it did too....
