I have an Omega 2.2 cdx, automatic, 2002 with 91k on the clock.

Yesterday, my car developed a gear box problem. Out of the blue, the car would not go beyond 2nd gear.

I can use 1st and 2nd in manual mode. In 'D' mode the car moves off from still through 1st and 2nd but will not move up the gears beyond that. Reverse also works.

When in 'D' mode and in 2nd gear the car reaches around twenty mph when the engine begins to race and the traction seems to disappear from the gearbox- it's as though the clutch has disengaged the gearbox from the drive. Slowing down again allows the traction to return and the engine stops racing but still remains in 2nd gear

3rd gear in manual mode produces the same result as in 'D' mode.

I have had the car for around 5 years and if she can be saved reasonably economically I would love to keep her.

Hope this isn't the end for her.

Any advise will be welcomed.

Any other symptoms? Loss of power/misfire etc?

Have you tried the pedal trick? Might not work being a 2.2, but if it does it will save getting the codes read

Also check the gearbox fluid level... be worth paying a garage an hours labour to rule it out... car needs to be up to temperature, level and engine running.

With no other symptoms a fluid and filter change  might be all it needs... could be something unrelated though... but codes and fluid level first

Just to add to the above, if at first the pedal trick wont work try putting gearbox in 'D' and then try it.

I have the same model and this worked for me.

Be interesting to know what happens when you select D and press the snowflake button.....under normal operation it should make it use 3rd and 4th and not use 1st or 2nd......iirc

That topic in a nutshell: Same exact symptoms and needed to change the box, I still have the old box but haven't got time to open it and see what's wrong there.

A complete, known good, gearbox will cost you around £75. You then need to get someone (Serek perhaps?) to fit it for you.
